With Horse Riding holidays growing in popularity, we’re getting a lot of people asking us where the best place is to saddle up in Europe. A survey by the British Horse Society found that 20% of horse-riding happens on horse riding holidays – which is huge growth from the previous years, and is only expected to grow. So, it makes sense that we’re seeing so many of you enquire about where to go for your next holiday.
As adventure holiday specialists it is our business to know where the adventure is, and that goes for horse-riding too. We’ve been working with local hosts who specialise in horse-riding holidays for a long time, and from that we’ve learnt a lot about what makes a good horse riding holiday and where you should go for those truly unique experiences. So, there are a couple questions we need to ask before we dive into which destinations are the best, and that is what makes a good horse riding experience? And, why do we stick to Europe?
What makes a good horse riding experience?
A truly exceptional horse riding holiday combines several key elements that transform a simple ride into an unforgettable adventure. First, it’s about the horses themselves. Well-trained, diverse breeds with different personalities that match your skill level, whether you’re a complete beginner or experienced rider. The best experiences offer small, intimate groups with expert instruction, ensuring personalised attention and safety.
Location is crucial. Riding through stunning landscapes like Tuscan vineyards, Sierra Nevada mountain paths, or Mallorca’s countryside creates those magical moments you’ll remember forever. The best holidays also offer flexibility, allowing you to progress at your own pace and add activities as you discover what excites you most.
Finally, authenticity matters. Following ancient Moorish mule paths, experiencing local culture, and staying in family-run establishments where tradition remains part of everyday life – these elements create connections that go far beyond just learning to ride.
Why stick to Europe?
Beyond the beautiful scenery, why would we suggest you stick to Europe for a horse riding holiday? Of course, there are some amazing, sustainable horse riding experiences outside of Europe, Morocco for example is a big one that we love, but we have a focus on Europe here for a few very important points. One, Europe has stricter animal welfare laws (especially in the EU), meaning we have greater assurances that the horses on these trips are better cared for. The providers we use are regularly inspected, which is common in both Italy and Spain, so we can be more confident when sending you on our trips. Secondly, there are such rich cultural and historical equestrian traditions in areas like the Palio in Siena or the world famous Andalusian horses. And it is for these reasons that we get so many horse-riding requests in Europe.
