On your Family Winter Retreat to Magical Ruka-Kuusamo, you embrace the Arctic not as a visitor, but as a participant in its rhythms. From the moment you arrive in Ruka-Kuusamo, you are welcomed by your host and transported into a landscape of snow-draped forests and crystal-clear skies.

Over five unhurried nights at Lumo Resort, you settle into the calm of Finnish Lapland — waking to pristine white views, breathing in pine-scented air and gathering each evening over beautifully prepared Arctic-inspired cuisine. With six days to immerse yourself fully, winter becomes something you feel, taste and live.

Here, you step into traditions that have shaped life in the North for generations. You glide through silent woodland on a reindeer sleigh, wrapped in blankets as the forest hushes around you. Immerse yourself with the spirit of a husky team, steering across snow covered trails beneath wide Arctic skies. Enjoy a snowmobile and ride through vast, snow-covered wilderness, pausing for a warming drink as stillness settles in.

Travel further into the remote part of Lapland, share in the joy of Christmas — baking, crafting and singing alongside Mr and Mrs Claus in an experience that feels intimate, authentic and wonderfully far from the ordinary.

With more time to explore, you can carve your own path on Ruka’s ski slopes or stand on a frozen lake to drill through thick ice and try traditional fishing — simple, elemental moments that root you in nature. This is not a fleeting winter break; it is a restorative retreat. You reconnect with the wild, with local culture and, most importantly, with each other.

*Per person cost based on 2 adults and 1 child staying in an Aurora Spa Room between 7th – 17th December & 9th January – 31st March

A full example itinerary is detailed below, activity timings can differ slightly, your own personal schedule will be given to you upon check in.

Arrival

On arrival in Ruka-Kuusamo Airport you are warmly welcomed by your host and transferred to your accommodation.

Settle into your accommodation, where snow-covered trees frame the view of this wonderful destination.

As evening falls, you enjoy a beautifully prepared three-course à la carte dinner, your first taste of the Head Chef’s Arctic-inspired cuisine.

Reindeer Farm and Sleigh Ride

Slow the pace and step into one of Lapland’s oldest traditions. At a small local reindeer farm, you’ll meet these gentle Arctic animals up close and hear how they remain central to life in the North. Your guide will share insights into herding traditions and the role reindeer continue to play in the region’s culture and livelihood.

Wrapped in warm blankets, you’ll then set off on a quiet sleigh ride through the snowy landscape. The soft rhythm of hooves on snow and the stillness of the forest create a calm, almost timeless moment — a simple yet authentic Arctic experience.

Meet Mr and Mrs Santa Claus

Travel deep into the snowy forest to Santa’s Cottage, around 30 minutes from Kuusamo, where a joyful Christmas day awaits. The adventure begins outdoors with tobogganing guided by Santa’s cheerful elves — laughter echoing through the trees before you gather inside a warm hut for grilled sausages and steaming hot drinks.

Soon, you are invited into the cottage itself to meet Mr and Mrs Santa Claus. Santa shares stories from his life in Lapland, welcoming each child as one of his official little helpers. Elf skills are put to the test with gingerbread and sweet bun baking, Christmas card crafting, and hands-on festive fun.

While the children bake and create, families can enjoy the cottage buffet with coffee, tea, traditional glögi and homemade berry juice. Gingerbread cookies and chocolates are available to enjoy throughout the visit, adding to the feeling of an unhurried Christmas celebration. There is also a small post office and gift corner where you can browse souvenirs or send a postcard with a special Arctic postmark.

The visit ends with everyone gathering together to sing Santa’s favourite Christmas carol in Finnish — a magical and authentic moment — before each child receives a small gift from Santa himself. Freshly baked treats are wrapped to take home, a sweet reminder of a day spent in the heart of Christmas.

Snowmobile Safari

Engine on. Snow beneath you. Forest stretching in every direction. This guided snowmobile safari is a classic Lapland experience, combining speed, scenery and the quiet drama of the Arctic landscape.

Riding two per snowmobile and led by an experienced guide, you’ll follow prepared trails through snow-laden forests and across open winter terrain. There’s time to pause along the way for a hot drink and snack, a moment to take in the stillness before setting off again.

For families, younger children travel safely in a sledge pulled by the guide’s snowmobile, wrapped in the Arctic air while adults take the controls. It’s a shared adventure — part adrenaline, part wilderness immersion — and entirely unforgettable.

Husky Safari and Farm Visit

Feel the quiet power of a husky team as you set off across snowy trails, guided by eager dogs bred for the Arctic winter. Whether departing directly from the resort or travelling to a nearby husky farm, this experience brings you close to one of Lapland’s most iconic traditions.

After a safety briefing, you’ll head out on a sled ride of approximately 45 minutes, gliding through forests and open landscapes. The rhythm of paws on snow and the crisp winter air create a moment that feels both exhilarating and timeless.

Back at the farm, there is time to meet the dogs properly — to stroke their thick fur, learn about their training, daily life and the principles of responsible husky care. A warm drink is served as you hear more about the bond between musher and team, rounding off an authentic Arctic adventure.

Private Sauna

Step away from the pace of the day and into the quiet warmth of a traditional Finnish sauna. Tucked into the forest beside the restaurant, this private sauna offers a peaceful space to unwind, surrounded by snow-covered trees and Arctic stillness.

Designed for up to four people, each one-hour session is entirely your own. With carried water and no shower, the experience stays true to its rustic roots — simple, authentic and deeply relaxing.

Farewell to Lapland

Enjoy a final breakfast as you take in the serene surroundings one last time.

Refreshed, reconnected and full of winter memories, you depart knowing you’ve experienced Lapland in a way few ever do – personal, immersive and truly unforgettable.

Rovaniemi Transfers

Transfers are available from and to Rovaniemi Airport.

Each vehicle can accommodate maximum 6 people including luggage.

If you require Rovaniemi Airport Transfers please remember to add these to your enquiry along with your flight details.

Day at the Slopes

Spend a blissful winter’s day wrapped in Arctic magic at Ruka Ski Resort.

You will be transferred travel through Finland’s snowy wilderness to Ruka, collect your ski equipment, and ascend by gondola to the top of the slopes—where endless white landscapes and crisp, pine-scented air set the scene. With lift tickets included, spend the day skiing hand in hand across perfectly groomed runs, pausing to soak in the views or warming up with a drink at a gorgeous bar nestled right in the heart of the slopes.

Later, drift down into Ruka Village for a relaxed meal at a local restaurant, sharing stories from the day as the winter light fades. It’s an experience that captures the quiet thrill, Nordic elegance, and intimate moments.

Traditional Ice Fishing

Step onto the frozen surface of Lake Nissinjärvi and experience one of Lapland’s simplest and most time-honoured traditions. With your guide, you’ll learn how to drill through the thick ice and lower your line into the still, dark water below — a quiet ritual practiced here for generations.

Surrounded by snow-covered forest and winter silence, ice fishing offers a slower rhythm of adventure. The lakes of Kuusamo are rich with fish, and if luck is on your side, your catch can be prepared over an open fire in a cosy grill hut. It’s a peaceful, authentic Arctic moment — unhurried, elemental and deeply connected to nature.
