This Sri Lanka adventure is designed for active families who want a holiday that combines wildlife, culture, outdoor adventure, local experiences and beach time. It is ideal for families who want more than a standard sightseeing trip, with a varied pace that keeps everyone engaged while still allowing time to relax.

Tour Summary:
Day 1 Chilaw
Day 2 & 3 Wilpattu National Park
Day 4-6 Nilaveli Beach Resort
Day 7- 9 Sigiriya
Day 10 & 11 Gammaduwa
Day 12 & 13 Kandy
Day 14 Departure

Begin with a gentle coastal arrival in Chilaw before heading into the wild landscapes of Wilpattu National Park, where you’ll stay in a safari camp and head out on game drives in search of elephants, leopards, crocodiles, sloth bears and birdlife. From there, travel to Nilaveli on Sri Lanka’s east coast for three nights by the beach, with calm turquoise waters, white sand and the option to enjoy more active beach or water-based experiences.

The journey then continues inland to the Cultural Triangle, where families can explore Dambulla Cave Temple, climb the iconic Sigiriya Lion Rock and walk up Pidurangala Rock for sunset. There is also the chance to explore Polonnaruwa, learn about the monkeys that live among the ancient ruins, and enjoy a village cycling experience with interactive local stops, which can be done by tuk tuk instead if preferred.

The final part of the journey brings a more local and hands-on feel, with an 8km guided walk to Gammaduwa through paddy fields, irrigation streams, forest patches and pepper farms. Families can choose between an optional walk towards Riverstone, a waterfall swim, mountain biking, tea estate walks or a hands-on tea-making experience. The trip finishes in Kandy with the Temple of the Tooth, Botanical Gardens, a village walk, tuk tuk ride, market visit and cooking class, before a final night near Negombo.

This itinerary is designed to make the most of Sri Lanka’s summer weather and is only available from April to the end of October, when the east coast and Cultural Triangle generally offer the best conditions. Families wishing to travel from November to the end of March should instead look at the Sri Lankan Winter Sun Family Adventure itinerary, which is better suited to the south, west and central regions during the winter season.

Overall, this is a brilliant choice for active families who want a well-balanced Sri Lanka holiday, combining safari, beach, cycling, rock climbs, village walks, wildlife, cooking and cultural discovery in one engaging two-week adventure.

Arrival Day

Arrive into Bandaranaike International Airport, where you will be met by your driver/ guide and transferred to Chilaw for your first night in Sri Lanka.

Chilaw is a lovely coastal town in the north west of Sri Lanka with a palm fringed sandy beach, perfect for your first dip after a long flight!

Tonight you will stay in Anantaya Resort and Spa, the perfect place to relax and unwind, with the Mangrove lagoon on one side and the ocean front sandy beach on the other.

Wilpattu National Park Safari

Today the adventure properly begins as you travel to Wilpattu National Park, where you’ll spend the night in an African-style safari camp. Wilpattu’s dense forest, scrubland, sand dunes and natural wetlands create a wilder, more adventurous safari setting.

In the afternoon, head out on your first game drive in search of elephants, leopards, crocodiles, sloth bears and birdlife. This is a brilliant introduction to Sri Lanka’s wildlife for active families who want their holiday to feel exciting from the start.

Accommodation: Big Game Camp

Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Morning Game drive in the park

Wake early for another game drive through Wilpattu, giving the family a second chance to track wildlife when the park is at its most atmospheric. Your driver will help seek out the best viewing and photography spots.

Later, return to camp and enjoy time to relax after the morning’s adventure. As evening falls, the safari camp comes into its own, with jungle sounds, torchlight and the sense of being right on the edge of the wilderness.

Nightfall brings new excitement; the thunder crack of ‘Elephant Crackers’ in the distance lit by farmers as a warning to elephants wandering too close to their harvest, an occasional hoot of an exotic owl, the soft purr of a jungle cat… you don’t quite realise you’re in the middle of an adventure until you live it!

Accommodation: Big Game Camp

Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Relax at Nilaveli Beach Resort

After your safari adventure, travel to the east coast for three nights at Nilaveli Beach Resort. This stretch of the trip gives the family time to recharge, with white sand, calm turquoise water and plenty of space to swim, paddle or simply relax.

For active family members, the beach stay can still feel part of the adventure, with the option to enjoy more energetic beach or water-based activities depending on local conditions and the family’s interests. The east coast works particularly well for this summer itinerary, as Nilaveli is one of the best beach areas during the May to October season.

Accommodation: Nilaveli Beach Resort

Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Dambulla Cave Temple

Today you’ll leave the coast and head inland to Dambulla, home to one of Sri Lanka’s most impressive cave temple complexes. Explore colourful frescoes, Buddha statues and atmospheric caves, while keeping an eye out for the monkeys that live around the temple.

This is a more visual and interactive way to experience Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage, with plenty to see, photograph and talk about along the way.

Late afternoon, you will head back to the hotel for dinner.

Accommodation: Hotel Sigiriya

Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Lion Rock and Pidurangala Rock at Sunset

Today is one of the most memorable active days of the trip.

Visit Sigiriya, Sri Lanka’s iconic Lion Rock fortress, and climb through ancient gardens, stairways and viewpoints to reach the summit. There are plenty of places to pause, take photos and enjoy the views, so the climb feels achievable as well as rewarding.

Later, head up Pidurangala Rock for sunset. This second climb gives the family a different perspective on Sigiriya and is a brilliant shared challenge for teenagers who enjoy active, outdoorsy experiences.

Accommodation: Hotel Sigiriya

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Cycling and Monkeys

Today brings together activity, culture and wildlife in a way that works particularly well for families.

The day can include a village cycling experience in the Sigiriya area, designed with families in mind. The ride includes five interactive local stops, giving teenagers the chance to see village life up close rather than simply passing through. Depending on the family’s preference, this experience can also be done by tuk tuk instead of bike, keeping it flexible for different energy levels.

You’ll also explore the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, where ruins, temples and palaces give a sense of Sri Lanka’s medieval history. The experience is brought to life with a guided walk focused on the monkeys that live among the ruins, making the day more engaging for younger travellers and teenagers. The day ends with a hands-on cooking lunch, adding a fun, sociable food element to the experience.

Accommodation: Hotel Sigiriya

Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Easy walk to Gammaduwa (8 kms)

Today you’ll transfer to Andawala and begin an 8km guided walk to the remote village of Gammaduwa. Your luggage will be transferred separately, so the family only needs to walk with daypacks.

The route follows tiny village paths, paddy farms, irrigation streams, forest patches and pepper farms before reaching Gammaduwa Heritage Bungalow, set on an old tea plantation. This is a great active day for teenagers: adventurous enough to feel rewarding, but not overly demanding.

You’ll stay at Gammaduwa Heritage Bungalow, a beautiful building on an old tea plantation, and a great base from which to start your journey to Riverstone tomorrow.

Accommodation: Gammaduwa Bungalow

Melas: Breakfast and dinner

At Leisure or walk to Riverstone

Today can be adapted to suit the family’s energy levels. Active families can take on the optional walk towards Riverstone, following trails from Gammaduwa through remote village landscapes, open grassland and jungle.

A highlight of the day is the stop at Puwakpitiya, where there is a beautiful waterfall for a swim and the chance to help prepare a local lunch using fresh ingredients. This gives the day a strong “real Sri Lanka” feel, combining walking, swimming, food and local interaction.

Alternatively, families can stay closer to Gammaduwa and enjoy the tea plantation, gentle estate walks, mountain biking trails or a hands-on tea-making experience.

Accommodation: Gammaduwa Bungalow

Melas: Breakfast and dinner

Travel to Kandy & Visit the Botanical Gardens

After breakfast, travel to Kandy and visit the Temple of the Tooth, one of the most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world. This gives the family an insight into Sri Lanka’s spiritual and cultural traditions.

You’ll also visit the Botanical Gardens, home to more than 4,000 species of plants and a renowned orchid collection. The gardens can be explored as a family treasure hunt, turning the visit into an interactive challenge rather than a passive sightseeing stop.

Accommodation: Kandyan Manor

Meals: Breakfast and dinner

Village Walk, TukTuk Ride, Market Visit and Cooking Class

Today is a hands-on local life experience near Kandy, designed to be fun, interactive and family-friendly. Your guided village walk takes you through a rural community, where you can observe daily life, traditional homes and local customs.

The host has highlighted this as a particularly good family day, with the chance to walk through paddy fields, visit a small waterfall for a swim, and enjoy lunch with a local family. You’ll also travel by tuk tuk, visit the market and then head into the kitchen to learn how to prepare traditional Sri Lankan dishes with a local chef.

For active families, this day works especially well because it combines movement, food, local people, tuk tuks and hands-on participation.

Accommodation: Kandyan Manor

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Spend your final afternoon relaxing at Villa Hundira, a tranquil property beside a lagoon with two pools, a spa, sea views and plenty of space to unwind.

After two weeks of safaris, swimming, cycling, rock climbs, village walks, tuk tuk rides and cooking experiences, this is a relaxed final night before departure.

During my time working in travel, I’ve travelled the majority of both India and Sri Lanka and discovered almost every place you could possibly explore in these crazy, yet amazing countries.

I’ve always enjoyed the outdoors and exploring, I grew up in an urban setting, so any chance I could get I was out exploring. The feeling of release you get from the outdoors, is completely different to anything you can feel.

The thing that inspired me to work in travel is the feeling of pure amazement when discovering something new or seeing something spectacular for the first time, you’re just totally immersed in this place and you just forget about everything else for a while.

Seeing this look on people’s faces during their tour in Sri Lanka is something I absolutely love and it’s what drives me to find amazing experiences for travellers to enjoy.

Sri Lanka has become very busy with tourism in some areas as many companies here offer the same tours to the same places. We however, like to go off the beaten track. It’s unbelievable how much there is to see in this wonderful country away from the main sights. For example, the busy national parks such as Yala or Udawalawe National Park can be very crowded, but if you go just 2 hours away to Gal Oya national park, it’s much less busy and you have a much more intimate experience, getting closer to the wildlife.
