Walking Food Tour in Lima's Historic City Centre

Lima and Peru’s story begins around the year 3000BC, long before Inca time.

Today offers you a leisurely introduction to Peru and Peruvian Culture.

As you travel to our first stop, Larco Herrera Manor, you will pass by a 2000-year-old adobe pyramid located in Lima’s residential areas. Larco Herrera is a renovated mansion that now houses one of Peru’s best museums. Inside, you will see a collection of Pre-Columbian art pieces, including metalwork, pottery, and textiles, providing insight into the complex societies of the Andean civilizations.

After exploring the museum, you will go to the historic center of Lima. This part of the city has a mix of different architectural styles, reflecting Peru’s rich history.

Once there, you will enjoy a tasty lunch at Casa Tambo, an old colonial home that has been turned into a Peruvian restaurant.

After lunch, you will continue your tour of Lima’s centre. You will walk along historic streets and visit the main square, experiencing the atmosphere of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Your visit will also include a stop at Casa Aliaga, the oldest continuously inhabited private residence in the New World. This house has been owned by the same family since the time of Francisco Pizarro in the 16th century. Visiting Casa Aliaga will give you a unique glimpse into colonial life and the architectural history of Lima.

You’ll have the chance to take in the surroundings of the main square and the façade of Arequipa’s cathedral. Then, we’ll visit La Compañia Church, renowned for its baroque style and colourful Cupula of Saint Ignacio. On our way to the Santa Catalina Monastery, we’ll stop by El Tambo La Cabezona, a 17th-century apartment built in a classic colonial style.

Journey from Arequipa to Yanque

Leaving Arequipa, embark on a 160 km drive to the Colca Canyon. The journey, shortly after departure, offers views of the Misti, Chachani, and Pichu Pichu volcanoes surrounding Arequipa. The road then ascends into the ‘Salinas y Aguada Blanca’ Reserve, home to many llama, alpaca, and vicuña herds that feed on the vast ‘Ichu’ pastures of the reserve.

A short detour from the main route takes you to the hidden Puruña Stone Forest, a geological wonder few travellers discover. A 20-minute walk from the parking area leads you into this bizarre landscape where volcanic ash and minerals have formed unusual rock sculptures along the slopes of a steep valley. You’ll spend about an hour exploring these strange formations that showcase the volcanic nature of the region before re-joining the main route.

Continuing your journey, a stop at a small road café allows for tasting warm Inca tea made with local herbs, known for aiding with high altitude. Next, the route crosses the highest section of the mountains towards ‘El Mirador de Los Andes’, a high pass with panoramic views of this volcanic section of the Andes, where up to six different volcanoes can be spotted. Time here is brief to avoid altitude issues before beginning the descent into the Colca Valley and Canyon, where the hotel is located.

Arrival is expected just before lunchtime, with the journey taking 3 to 4 hours, depending on stops.

The afternoon is free for relaxation and enjoying the picturesque surroundings.

Accommodation: Colca Lodge Spa and Hot Springs

After witnessing the condors, it’s time to begin the return journey to your hotel with a few experiences along the way. First, a short stop at the Antahuilque viewpoint, where the impressive terraces built by the Collaguas, a pre-Inca culture that lived here 1500 years ago, can be seen. Then, brief visits to the Andean villages of Maca and Yanque, both known for their charming ambiance and impressive colonial churches. Depending on the location of your hotel, it’s possible to stop at Chivay too.

Back at the hotel, the rest of the morning and early afternoon is free to relax and enjoy the rural landscapes of the Colca Canyon.

In the afternoon, you can embark on a short hike to the Uyo Uyo archaeological site in the higher areas of the valley slope. This pre-Inca site offers views of the Sabancaya Volcano and the village of Yanque below.
