This journey traces a gentle arc from the lively lights of Tromsø to the quiet soul of Malangen, inviting you to slip into a rhythm shaped by winter itself.

It begins with the sea and fjords opening like pages of an old story, whales surfacing with a grace that challenges understanding. Silent cruising makes you a respectful observer, drifting through their world without disturbing it.

Then the landscape deepens. Roads narrow, mountains edge closer, and the horizons widen in ways that feel almost meditative. Malangen offers the kind of stillness you rarely find—snow drifting between trees, the soft glow of cabins, a sense of being held by the wilderness rather than passing through it.

You follow huskies through frozen forests, trusting their instinctive pulse. Later, at Camp Nikka, you learn to wait for the Northern Lights the Arctic way, not chasing but listening, allowing the night to reveal what it chooses. The aurora becomes less a spectacle and more an encounter, something felt as much as seen.

Meals are simple, mornings quiet, evenings spacious. You begin to notice the small things: the crunch of snow underfoot, the steam from a mug beside a fire, the way darkness here feels alive rather than empty. Slowly, the Arctic shifts from destination to experience.

This is not just a winter holiday. It is an invitation to slow down, breathe deeper, and let the far north cast its spell.

*From price on per person based on double/twin occupancy from 15th November to 25th December.

A full example itinerary is detailed below, activity timings can differ slightly, your own personal schedule will be given to you upon check in.

Arrival in Tromsø, Gateway to the Arctic

You land in a small city wrapped in mountains and winter light, stepping into air that carries the crisp promise of the far north. Your driver greets you in the arrivals hall and you drift through the city by private transfer, watching the harbour glimmer against the early dusk.

You check into your hotel, settling into your room and letting the anticipation of the days ahead unfold quietly. Tromsø hums beneath you—compact, cultural, endlessly curious—inviting an evening wander before tomorrow’s adventure begins.

Silent Whale Watching across Arctic Fjords

This morning you will leave early for an unforgettable Silent Whale Watching experience aboard a state-of-the-art hybrid-electric ship. This eco-friendly vessel allows for a quiet and unobtrusive journey, ensuring a minimal impact on the natural environment and a peaceful atmosphere for observing the majestic whales. As you glide through the Arctic waters, you’ll have the chance to witness these magnificent creatures up close, all while enjoying the comfort and modern amenities of the ship.

Expert guides will be on hand to provide fascinating insights into the behaviour and habitat of the whales, enhancing your understanding and appreciation of these incredible marine mammals. This trip is perfect for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers seeking a serene and responsible way to experience the beauty of Tromsø’s marine life. The hybrid-electric ship ensures a smooth and silent voyage, making this a truly unique and memorable adventure.

Whales habitually frequent this area and so the chance of seeing them is good, though it cannot be guaranteed.

Seasonal replacement:  Whale watching season is from Nov-Jan. For travel in Feb the experience will be switched for an Aurora Cruise Dinner

After breakfast, you board the shared transfer heading south, a journey of around 1.5 hours covering roughly 70 km of coastline. Wide windows frame the world as it gradually shifts—Tromsø’s lively harbour giving way to long stretches of frozen fjord, clusters of red-painted houses, and mountains layered in soft greys and whites. You begin to sense why people retreat here: the quiet feels deeper, the landscape more honest.

The road follows the water for much of the drive, offering sweeping views that pull you into the wilderness at a patient pace. Eventually Malangen Resort appears above the fjord, nestled between snowy slopes and still water. You check in, take a moment to exhale, and allow the unhurried rhythm of this quieter corner of Norway to settle around you.

Evening is yours. Wander the resort grounds, watch dusk fold into the fjord, or simply rest before tomorrow’s adventures.

Husky Sledding Through Winter Trails & Aurora Watch at Camp Nikka

Morning arrives with a muted glow. After breakfast, you pull on the warm thermal gear provided—suits, boots, gloves—feeling yourself gradually armoured against the Arctic day. At the husky centre, a chorus of excited dogs greets you. They tug at their harnesses, eager, almost impatient, as if they already know the trail ahead.

Following a safety briefing and a simple lesson in mushing commands, you pair up—one driving, the other seated in the sled, with the chance to switch halfway. When the huskies launch forward, the world changes instantly. Snow sprays lightly beneath the runners, trees blur into white brushstrokes, and the only sounds are paws, breath, and the quiet pulse of winter. You move through forests and open landscapes, sensing the ancient partnership between humans and dogs, questioning how such raw exhilaration can also feel so peaceful.

Later that evening, your journey turns inward. You travel to Camp Nikka, a small lake used as a natural observatory with no light pollution. Instead of chasing the aurora by vehicle, you settle into a lavvu warmed by a crackling fire. You sip hot drinks, snack on simple comfort food, and listen to stories and playful Northern Lights-themed games shared inside the tent.
Outside, the darkness is soft and expectant. If the aurora appears, it dances above the lake in quiet splendour—green arcs, shifting ribbons, a sky alive with mystery. And if it doesn’t, the night still feels meaningful, shaped by stillness, warmth, and the ancient ritual of watching the northern sky.

Departure from Tromsø

You return by transfer towards Tromsø Airport, mountains rising once more in farewell. Perhaps you leave with more questions than answers—why the north feels so grounding, why silence can be so full—but that is the nature of the Arctic. It stays with you.

FAQs

When can I travel on this break?

The package dates on the experience coincide with Whale watching season and conditions for dog sledding; therefore dates run from 1st Dec to 31st March. When travelling after 31st January the package will include Aurora Dinner Cruise instead of Whale watching trip.

What clothes should I pack?

The temperatures in Tromsø are relatively mild in winter, considering the latitude, however on the coldest nights of the year, the temperature can drop to -14 °C. Please bring warm clothes, boots, gloves, hat and scarf.

In particular, during the Whale watching experience you will sail in arctic waters, and it will feel incredibly cold when you stand outside.

Am I guaranteed to see Whales?

Whales are wild animals and sadly we can't guarantee sightings. Whilst the crew on the boat will try their best to succeed, it is entirely up to nature if you see whales on a particular day or not. They see whales on most days, however, seeing whales can be anything from 1 orca in the distance to a pack of humpback whales in front of the boat. They use the boat and equipment to improve your chances and the guides and captain are constantly on the lookout for whales.

Can children travel on this trip?

This package is setup for adults only however children (minimum ages is 8 years or older) can travel. Please let us know via chat or hello@nitgb.com your room requirements and we can discuss room options with our local host to confirm pricing and availability.
