This Winter tour runs from 1st February – 14th May**

Far beyond the Arctic Circle, this Svalbard winter adventure takes you to the very edge of the world. Across four unforgettable days, you’ll experience the raw power and beauty of this polar wilderness — from gliding over frozen fjords by snowmobile to following huskies through icy valleys.

Longyearbyen, the settlement you’ll call home during your stay, is a surreal mix of frontier spirit and quiet comfort. Its colourful wooden buildings are surrounded by vast tundra, silent peaks, and icy coastlines. Each night, the darkness invites a new chance to see the Aurora Borealis shimmer across the sky — a light show you’ll never forget.

You’ll dive into the fascinating contrasts of life here: from the cold, silent coal mines of the past to the warm camaraderie of evenings by the fire. And with carefully chosen experiences, you’ll not only explore the Arctic, but connect with it.

This is more than just a short break — it’s a true Arctic encounter, designed for the curious traveller seeking rare, remote, and enriching experiences.

Please note that on experiences throughout the tour you may join a small group. A full example itinerary is detailed below, activity timings can differ slightly, your own personal schedule will be given to you upon check in.

Arrival in Svalbard & Wilderness Evening at Camp Barentz

Arrive in Svalbard and take private transfer to Svalbard Hotell, Polfareren (Journey is approximately 5-10min) where you will check-in for your break (you will still check-in at the Polfareren if you choose to stay at The Vault or Svalbard Lodge).

As evening falls, venture into the wild for an authentic Arctic experience at Camp Barentz. Nestled in the vast wilderness outside Longyearbyen, this secluded setting offers a magical atmosphere where you’ll gather around a roaring fire, enjoy traditional reindeer soup, and sip on warming drinks. Listen to captivating stories of Arctic exploration while enjoying homemade cake and coffee, making for an unforgettable night under the Northern Lights.

Snowmobile Safari & Arctic Dining

Wake to the calm hush of the Arctic morning and fuel up with a hearty breakfast. Today’s adventure takes you deep into Svalbard’s striking wilderness on a guided snowmobile safari to Tempelfjorden. After a safety briefing and gear fitting, set off across the open tundra, following a route through snow-covered valleys, frozen rivers, and sweeping fjord landscapes.

As you journey through this vast and silent environment, the sheer scale and solitude of the Arctic will leave a lasting impression. The route leads you to Tempelfjorden, where massive glacier fronts meet the frozen sea — a sight of raw, frozen beauty that few ever witness. Along the way, you’ll stop in a scenic, sheltered spot to enjoy a warm lunch served outdoors. Hot drinks and biscuits will also be provided, offering welcome comfort in the crisp Arctic air.

After returning to Longyearbyen in the afternoon, you’ll have time to rest and warm up before dinner. In the evening, enjoy a relaxed 2-course meal at Svalbar, a friendly and welcoming spot where locals and visitors gather to share stories and enjoy hearty Arctic fare. It’s the perfect end to a day filled with exploration and awe.

Life in the Mine & Arctic Dog Sledding

Start your day with breakfast and prepare for a journey beneath the surface of Svalbard’s past. A guided visit to Coal Mine 3 offers a rare glimpse into the island’s industrial heritage. Donning protective gear, you’ll venture into the preserved workings of this now-closed mine, where time seems frozen. Explore narrow tunnels once bustling with activity and hear stories of the miners who braved extreme conditions to extract coal from the Arctic rock. It’s a powerful, immersive experience that reveals the grit and resilience of Svalbard’s early inhabitants.

After returning to Longyearbyen for a leisurely lunch, step from history into adventure as you meet your next companions — a team of enthusiastic sled dogs. The dog sledding experience takes you out into the snowy wilderness, where the silence is broken only by the crunch of the sled on snow and the rhythmic panting of the huskies. With guidance from experienced mushers, you’ll glide through valleys and over frozen landscapes, surrounded by nothing but Arctic tranquillity and white-tipped peaks.

In the evening, gather at the stylish Restaurant Polfareren for a 3-course dinner featuring fresh, locally inspired cuisine. It’s an elegant yet relaxed setting to reflect on the day’s contrasts — from the dark depths of the mine to the wide-open Arctic skies.

Curiosity naturally draws people to Svalbard, a wilderness that’s as captivating as it is challenging to navigate safely. Over the years, our role as guides has evolved to help travellers explore the archipelago responsibly, while sharing the many stories and insights that make life here so unique.

Our aim is to create meaningful experiences rooted in respect – for both our guests and the fragile environment we call home.

In winter, we spend our days out on snowmobiles, visiting ice caves, historical sites, frozen fjords, and expansive snowy landscapes.

As the seasons change, so do our adventures. In summer and beyond, we explore the stunning Isfjorden by open RIB boat, hike through wild terrain, and head out on ATV safaris – just to name a few.

We’re a diverse team of guides with different personalities, backgrounds, and years spent in Svalbard. But what unites us is a shared love for nature and a passion for sharing it with others.

Location

Located in the heart of the Arctic, Svalbard is one of the world’s northernmost inhabited regions, offering a striking contrast between remote wilderness and vibrant local culture. In summer, the midnight sun bathes the landscape in endless daylight, revealing dramatic mountain peaks, icy fjords, and vast tundra teeming with life.

Longyearbyen, the main settlement, is a fascinating blend of adventure and history, where modern comforts meet the raw beauty of the Arctic. This unique destination offers the perfect balance between thrilling outdoor activities and moments of serene appreciation for the awe-inspiring landscape.

FAQs

When can I travel on this experience?

This winter adventure is available to book between 01st February and 14th May 2026. During this period, Svalbard offers spectacular winter conditions, with snow-covered landscapes, long twilight days, and excellent chances to see the Northern Lights — particularly earlier in the season. Dog sledding, snowmobiling, and other Arctic activities are all at their best during these months.

Is there a minimum age for this package?

Minimum age on this tour is 12 years old

Will I see any Polar bears when I'm in Svalbard?

Polar bears do inhabit Svalbard, but sightings are very rare around Longyearbyen and the areas visited during this experience. During February to May, sea ice conditions may bring them closer to the east coast or remote regions, but you are unlikely to encounter one on this itinerary.

All activities are led by experienced local guides who are trained in safety protocols and aware of bear presence in the region. If you’re particularly interested in seeing polar bears, summer boat expeditions to the more remote parts of the archipelago offer the best chance of spotting them in the wild.

What kind of meals are included?

Daily breakfast is included with your accommodation. You’ll also enjoy a warm lunch and hot drinks during the snowmobile safari, a 2-course dinner at Svalbar, and a 3-course dinner at Restaurant Polfareren. A warm meal is provided during the Northern Lights evening at Camp Barentz.

Can I see the Northern Lights during this trip?

Yes, you have a good chance of seeing the Northern Lights between February and early April, especially during the Camp Barentz wilderness evening. However, sightings depend on weather conditions and solar activity and cannot be guaranteed.

Is travel insurance required?

Yes, travel insurance is mandatory and should include winter sports cover, particularly for snowmobiling and dog sledding. Check that your policy covers activities in remote Arctic environments.

Are there daylight hours in Svalbard at this time of year?

Yes. From February onwards, Svalbard gradually moves out of the Polar Night. Days lengthen quickly, with soft twilight in early February and nearly full daylight by April and May — offering unique lighting for photography and scenic views.

What are the temperatures like in Svalbard between February and May?

Temperatures in Svalbard during this period typically range from -20°C to -5°C in February and gradually rise to around 0°C to -5°C by May. The cold is dry, which can feel less harsh than damp cold, but wind chill can make it feel colder — especially during outdoor activities like snowmobiling and dog sledding.

Dressing in proper layers is essential, and your host provides outer thermal clothing for the more exposed excursions to ensure you're safe and comfortable throughout your stay.
