This Northern Lights tour runs from 1st November – 31st January**

This Svalbard experience is more than just a holiday – it’s a journey into one of the Earth’s most remote and mesmerising environments. Wrapped in the perpetual twilight of the polar night, you’ll explore wild landscapes by snowmobile and dogsled, dine in warmth while the aurora dances above, and uncover the human stories behind this frozen frontier.

Svalbard’s stillness and solitude invite a sense of wonder that is hard to find elsewhere. Whether standing outside a remote cabin under the stars, or gliding behind a team of eager huskies, every moment connects you deeply to nature and the raw, untamed beauty of the Arctic.

You’ll step into the miner’s boots during a visit to the old coal mine, gaining insight into the tough but fascinating history of life here. And when each day draws to a close, you’ll be welcomed by warm hospitality, excellent food, and the comfort of your central lodge.

This is an immersive Arctic break designed to awaken your spirit of adventure while still providing moments of peace, connection, and comfort – all beneath one of the most extraordinary night skies on Earth.

Please note that on experiences throughout the tour you may join a small group. A full example itinerary is detailed below, activity timings can differ slightly, your own personal schedule will be given to you upon check in.

Arrival in Svalbard & Wilderness Evening at Camp Barentz

Arrive in Svalbard and take private transfer to Svalbard Hotell, Polfareren (Journey is approximately 5-10min) where you will check-in for your break (you will still check-in at the Polfareren if you choose to stay at The Vault or Svalbard Lodge).

As evening falls, venture into the wild for an authentic Arctic experience at Camp Barentz. Nestled in the vast wilderness outside Longyearbyen, this secluded setting offers a magical atmosphere where you’ll gather around a roaring fire, enjoy traditional reindeer soup, and sip on warming drinks. Listen to captivating stories of Arctic exploration while enjoying homemade cake and coffee, making for an unforgettable night under the Northern Lights.

Northern Lights Safari by Snowmobile & Dinner at Svalbar

After a hearty breakfast, you’ll gear up for a thrilling Arctic adventure. Your morning begins with a full briefing and safety instructions before heading out on a 3.5-hour snowmobile safari across the pristine Svalbard wilderness. With the faint twilight casting a magical blue glow across the snow, you’ll journey through untouched valleys, icy plains, and past frozen mountain ridges. The guide leads you to some of the best Aurora-spotting locations, far from any artificial lights, where you’ll pause for warm drinks and time to absorb the silence and scale of this Arctic environment.

As you return to Longyearbyen for lunch (not included), the rest of the day is yours to explore at your leisure. Browse the town’s local boutiques for handmade crafts or step into the North Pole Expedition Museum for tales of bravery and survival. Come evening, you’ll enjoy a relaxed and social 2-course dinner at Svalbar, a local favourite known for its Arctic twist on hearty international cuisine and a laid-back atmosphere – the perfect way to wind down after a day of exhilarating exploration.

Hike to Global Seed Vault & Dog Sledding in the Polar Night

Climb above Longyearbyen on a guided Arctic hike to one of the most remarkable sites on Earth — the Global Seed Vault. This 4 km return walk takes you steadily up through stark tundra landscapes to the mountainside entrance of the world’s “doomsday vault,” where millions of crop seeds are safeguarded for the future of humanity.

As you ascend, your guide brings the landscape to life — explaining the science of permafrost, the story behind the vault’s creation and Svalbard’s role in global food security. From the viewpoint near the entrance, pause to take in sweeping panoramas across Adventfjorden and the dramatic peaks surrounding the settlement.

You won’t enter the vault itself, but standing at its striking entrance — embedded in the mountainside — offers a rare and memorable perspective on this globally significant site.

Following a break for lunch in town (at your own pace – perhaps try a local café like Fruene or the Coal Miners’ Bar & Grill), you’ll prepare for one of the most iconic Arctic activities: dog sledding in the polar night. At 15:00, you meet your team of enthusiastic huskies and receive a brief introduction to the sleds and how to steer them. Once ready, you set off into the deepening twilight, where the silence of the landscape is broken only by the sound of paws on snow and the sled gliding smoothly behind them. With headlamps lighting your way and chances to see the aurora ripple above, this 4-hour experience is as peaceful as it is powerful – a truly unforgettable way to connect with nature.

Return to Longyearbyen just in time to freshen up before enjoying a 3-course dinner at Restaurant Polfareren. Expect a beautifully curated Arctic menu featuring local ingredients such as reindeer, Arctic char, or wild herbs, all served in a refined yet cosy setting. It’s the perfect finale to a day rich in stories, culture, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences.

Curiosity naturally draws people to Svalbard, a wilderness that’s as captivating as it is challenging to navigate safely. Over the years, our role as guides has evolved to help travellers explore the archipelago responsibly, while sharing the many stories and insights that make life here so unique.

Our aim is to create meaningful experiences rooted in respect – for both our guests and the fragile environment we call home.

In winter, we spend our days out on snowmobiles, visiting ice caves, historical sites, frozen fjords, and expansive snowy landscapes.

As the seasons change, so do our adventures. In summer and beyond, we explore the stunning Isfjorden by open RIB boat, hike through wild terrain, and head out on ATV safaris – just to name a few.

We’re a diverse team of guides with different personalities, backgrounds, and years spent in Svalbard. But what unites us is a shared love for nature and a passion for sharing it with others.

Location

Located in the heart of the Arctic, Svalbard is one of the world’s northernmost inhabited regions, offering a striking contrast between remote wilderness and vibrant local culture. In summer, the midnight sun bathes the landscape in endless daylight, revealing dramatic mountain peaks, icy fjords, and vast tundra teeming with life.

Longyearbyen, the main settlement, is a fascinating blend of adventure and history, where modern comforts meet the raw beauty of the Arctic. This unique destination offers the perfect balance between thrilling outdoor activities and moments of serene appreciation for the awe-inspiring landscape.

FAQs

When can I travel on this experience?

This experience runs between 01st November and 31st January, during Svalbard’s polar night – a unique time of year when the sun never rises, creating the perfect dark skies for spotting the Northern Lights. This is also when snow conditions are ideal for snowmobiling, dog sledding, and other Arctic adventures.

Is there a minimum age for this package?

Minimum age on this tour is 12 years old

Will I see any Polar bears when I'm in Svalbard?

While Svalbard is home to more polar bears than people, sightings are rare near Longyearbyen and especially in winter, when bears are typically further out on the sea ice hunting. Encounters are possible but highly unlikely on this itinerary. However, the presence of polar bears in the region means your guides are always well-prepared and carry safety equipment on wilderness excursions. You may spot tracks or signs of bear activity, but seeing one in the wild is never guaranteed – and part of what keeps the Arctic so thrillingly unpredictable.

Can I extend my stay or add extra activities?

Yes, additional nights and activities can be arranged upon request. Please contact us via chat, email hello@nitgb.com or call us on 0203 925 8518.

Are meals included in the package?

Some meals are included, such as dinners at selected restaurants.

Are dietary requirements catered for?

Yes, most restaurants and excursion providers can accommodate dietary requirements if informed in advance.

How do I get to Svalbard?

Flights to Svalbard operate from Oslo and Tromsø, with Norwegian and SAS airlines offering regular services. Flights are NOT included in this package.

What winter gear is provided by the hosts?

The host provides essential thermal clothing for outdoor activities to ensure you stay warm and comfortable in Arctic conditions. This typically includes a thermal overall, insulated boots, warm mittens, a balaclava, and a helmet (for snowmobiling). All specialist equipment needed for snowmobiling and dog sledding is also included. You should still bring your own base layers, wool socks, and winter accessories like a hat and scarf for added warmth between activities.

How much light is there at this time of year?

From early November to late January, Svalbard experiences the polar night, meaning the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon at all. However, it’s not completely dark 24/7 — around midday, a soft twilight called “blue hour” bathes the landscape in an ethereal glow for a few hours. The rest of the day varies between deep twilight and full darkness, creating ideal conditions for spotting the Northern Lights and adding a magical, otherworldly atmosphere to all your activities. It’s a unique and beautiful experience unlike

How cold will it be?

During the winter season in Svalbard (November to January), temperatures typically range between -5°C and -20°C, though it can feel colder with wind chill, especially during snowmobile or dog sledding excursions. The Arctic air is often dry, which can make the cold more manageable than damp winter weather elsewhere. With the high-quality thermal gear provided and proper layering, most travellers find the cold invigorating rather than uncomfortable – and part of the adventure!

Am I guaranteed to see the Northern Lights?

While Svalbard offers some of the best conditions in the world for viewing the Northern Lights, sightings can never be guaranteed – as they depend on both solar activity and clear skies. That said, visiting during the polar night gives you 24/7 darkness, maximising your chances. Many travellers do experience the aurora at least once during their stay, and your itinerary includes multiple opportunities to be out in ideal conditions. Even if nature doesn’t deliver, the Arctic scenery, unique twilight, and magical atmosphere still make for an unforgettable adventure.
