What you'll do

Overview

There is a rhythm to Montenegro that only reveals itself slowly — not from the road, but from the water.

Over eight days, you will trace a route that few travellers truly experience, moving from the quiet expanse of Lake Skadar to the dramatic curves of Boka Bay, and onwards to the wild, open coastline of the Adriatic. Each stretch of water tells a different story — shifting from stillness to scale, from hidden corners to wide horizons.

This is not simply a kayaking trip. It is a journey through contrast. One moment you are gliding through lily-covered channels, the next crossing a bay lined with stone palaces, and later paddling beneath cliffs that rise sharply from the sea. Between these moments, you step ashore into places shaped by centuries of history — monasteries, island churches, and towns where time seems to fold in on itself.

Along the way, you will meet the quieter side of Montenegro. Shared meals, local wine, and stories told not as performances, but as part of everyday life. The experience is guided throughout by those who know these waters intimately, adjusting the pace and route to match both conditions and the moment.

By the time you reach the southern coast, something has shifted. The landscapes have changed, yes — but so has your perspective. What began as an adventure becomes something more immersive, more grounded, and far more difficult to leave behind.

Wine and dining tour in Lake Skadar area

On arrival, you will be met and transferred to Podgorica, where you settle into your hotel in the heart of the city. There is a gentle ease to the first few hours — a moment to arrive, to pause, to feel the shift into a slower rhythm.

Later, you will journey out towards the shores of Lake Skadar, where vineyards stretch across rolling hills. In the village of Meterizi, you will be welcomed into a traditional setting for an evening of local wine and food. Flavours are simple but deeply rooted — homemade dishes, regional wines, and stories that carry generations of heritage.

As the evening draws in, you return to Podgorica, where the rest of the night is yours to unwind.

Accommodation: Boscovich Boutique Hotel (or similar)
Meals: Traditional food and wine experience included

Kayaking from Historic Medieval Fortress to Virpazar

After breakfast, you will travel to the historic site of Žabljak Crnojevića, once a medieval capital perched above the lake. From here, your kayaking journey begins — gently at first, along a narrow river that slowly opens into the vast expanse of Lake Skadar.

You will paddle through waterways lined with water lilies, passing quiet fishing villages and dense willow forests. The lake reveals itself gradually — not in spectacle, but in detail. Birdlife moves overhead, the stillness broken only by the rhythm of your paddle.

The route covers around 16km, with plenty of time to pause, take in the scenery, and absorb the stories carried through this landscape.

Returning to Podgorica in the afternoon, the evening is free to explore at your own pace.

Accommodation: Boscovich Boutique Hotel (or similar)
Meals: Breakfast included

Kayaking on Lake Skadar – Monasteries and Hidden Bays

Today takes you deeper into the quieter, more remote corners of Lake Skadar. Launching from the secluded shores of Pješačac Beach, you will paddle across wide, open water towards the island of Grmožur, a striking former prison fortress.

The route continues through hidden bays and traditional fishing settlements, including the peaceful inlet of Raduš oko — the deepest point of the lake. Here, you may choose to stop for lunch at a local household, where fresh, simple dishes reflect the rhythms of lakeside life (payable locally).

In the afternoon, you reach the Murići Islands, where history and nature intertwine. You will visit Beška Monastery, a 14th-century site set quietly among the water and hills.

After your kayaking experience, you return to Podgorica for a relaxed evening.

Accommodation: Boscovich Boutique Hotel (or similar)
Meals: Breakfast included

Cetinje, Lovćen National Park and Arrival in Kotor

After breakfast, you leave the lake behind and travel into the mountains. The landscape shifts quickly — from wetlands to winding roads and panoramic viewpoints.

In Cetinje, Montenegro’s historic royal capital, you will explore a town shaped by culture and history. A visit to the Museum of King Nikola offers insight into the country’s past, before continuing towards Lovćen National Park.

Here, you will climb to the Lovćen Mausoleum, set high above the coastline. The views stretch across mountains and down into the Adriatic — a striking contrast to the landscapes of the previous days.

Later, you descend towards the coast and arrive in Kotor, where the evening is yours to explore this atmospheric seaside town.

Accommodation: Alkima Hotel (or similar)
Meals: Breakfast included

Kayaking in Boka Bay – Kotor to Risan

Today, you take to the water once more — this time in the sheltered, fjord-like waters of Boka Bay. Setting off near Kotor’s Old Town, you paddle along a coastline lined with stone villages, churches, and centuries-old architecture.

Crossing the bay, you will visit the iconic Our Lady of the Rocks, a small island church built by local tradition and devotion. From here, the route continues to Perast, often described as the most beautiful town in the bay.

The journey ends in Risan, home to ancient Roman mosaics and layers of history. After exploring, you return to Kotor, where the evening is free to enjoy the town at your own pace.

Accommodation: Alkima Hotel (or similar)
Meals: Breakfast included

Kayaking the Adriatic Coast – Sveti Stefan to Bar

The scenery shifts again today, as you head to the open Adriatic coastline. Starting near the iconic island of Sveti Stefan, you begin one of the most dramatic kayaking routes of the trip.

You will paddle past hidden coves, steep cliffs, and quiet beaches only accessible from the water. Along the way, you pass landmarks such as the Church of Sveta Neđelja, perched on a small island just offshore.

This is a longer and more immersive day on the water — around 23km — though the route can be adjusted depending on conditions and pace.

After reaching the Bar region, you transfer to your hotel in Old Town Bar, where the atmosphere feels distinctly different — more relaxed, more local, more undiscovered.

Accommodation: Stara Čaršija Hotel & Spa (or similar)
Meals: Breakfast included

Kayaking the Wild Coast – Utjeha to Ulcinj

Your final day on the water explores one of Montenegro’s least developed and most striking stretches of coastline.

Starting from Utjeha, you paddle along a largely untouched shoreline, passing Crystal Beach, the island of Stari Ulcinj, and the Bay of Olives. The sense of remoteness here is different — less shaped by history, more by nature.

After around 17km on the water, you arrive beneath the walls of Ulcinj’s Old Town, where the journey comes to a natural close.

Returning to Bar for your final evening, there is time to reflect on the journey — from lake to mountains to sea.

Accommodation: Stara Čaršija Hotel & Spa (or similar)
Meals: Breakfast included

Departure

After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport or your next destination within Montenegro.

The journey may be over, but the contrasts linger — still lakes, high mountains, and the open sea, all experienced at a slower, more intimate pace.

Meals: Breakfast included
