Your journey begins close to Male, where you will explore the quieter local side of island city life before travelling onwards to Goidhoo, a peaceful island known for its cultural heritage, freshwater lakes, mangroves and beautiful beaches. Here, days are spent snorkelling over colourful coral reefs, kayaking through mangrove waterways, sampling traditional Maldivian hedika and learning about the island’s fascinating stories and natural environment.

You will then continue to Fulhadhoo, one of the most beautiful islands in the Baa Atoll, where powder-soft sands, turquoise lagoons and tropical forest create the perfect setting for both adventure and relaxation. Search for turtles, rays and tropical fish on guided snorkelling trips, visit a coral nursery, learn about manta ray and turtle conservation, and gain a deeper understanding of the importance of protecting this fragile marine paradise.

With a balance of local encounters, marine adventures, conservation experiences and time to unwind by the ocean, this 7-night journey offers a more meaningful way to experience the Maldives. It is perfect for travellers who want the beauty of the islands, but with a richer connection to the people, culture and environment that make them truly unforgettable.

Arrival

Upon arrival at Velana International Airport you will be welcomed by your guide who will assist with your transfer to Hulhumale.

After settling into your guest house, you will journey across Male to the smaller neighboring island of Villimale, to discover the quieter side of city life. Accompanied by your guide, wander the quiet streets with their pastel-coloured local houses.

Time in Goidhoo

Spend the morning exploring Male on foot with your tour leader.

Learn the stories of Hukuru Miskiy – The Friday Mosque, visit key points of interest that weave their history into the story of this unusual capital city and take in the smells and flavors at the local markets.

After time for lunch board a speedboat for the two-hour journey to the island of Goidhoo. Goidhoo retains a cultural feel with ancient mosques and wells. The island’s natural wonders include freshwater lakes, which are quite unusual in the Maldives, mangroves and a beautiful beach, as well as many vegetable and fruit farms.

After checking into a local island hotel drop by a local cafe to sample traditional hedika. This afternoon tradition is best described as the Maldives equivalent of tapas! Walk into any café between 3pm and 5pm and you will find an array of bite size savoury and sweet delights, served with black tea. Then it’s time to hit the beach for a sunset swim.

Snorkelling and island discovery

This morning immerse yourself in the breathtaking beauty of the Maldives as you embark on your first underwater adventure.

Today with your guide enjoy the day snorkeling, enjoy a vibrant tapestry of ocean life will unfold before your eyes, from shimmering schools of tropical fish to elusive creatures tucked within the coral, each one adds to the symphony of hues that paint this underwater landscape.

Back on dry land, in the afternoon you will explore the island of Goidhoo. In the 19th century, a female African slave who had been bought by the king on his Hajj trip to Mecca was formally released from slavery. A house and a well were built for her to settle on Goidhoo. The freeing of slaves before the death of the owner was a common practice among the very high nobility in the Maldives. Now there are some families from Goidhoo that can trace their decadency to this African ancestor.

Following dinner spend time at the beach surrounded by lush vegetation see how many of the glittering constellations you can name as they stretch out above you in an inky black sky.

kayak Day

This morning, you will kayak one of the island’s mangrove lakes and learn why the mangroves play such an important role in the Maldives.

Your guide will coach you on how to paddle and manoeuvre the kayak before you set off to explore this unique Maldives ecosystem. As you navigate the waterway, your guide will provide valuable insights, sharing stories of the delicate balance between the mangroves, the surrounding marine environment, and the local communities.

Free afternoon to enjoy the beach.

After dinner your guide will introduce you to the work of the Olive Ridley project. Providing an insight into their environmental monitoring and turtle studies preparing you for our turtle snorkeling tomorrow.

This morning, you will travel by early morning public ferry the short distance to Fulhadhoo, where once checked in to your accommodation head out by speedboat to snorkel in search of turtles. The soft corals available on the reef you will visit usually mean it’s lunchtime all the time for turtles! Before entering the water, your guide will share the turtle snorkeling code of conduct, ensuring the experience is memorable for both you and the turtle. The coral reefs in this area are teeming with colourful fish and various sea mammals. Keep your eyes open for sharks and rays.

Fulhadhoo is arguably one of the most beautiful islands of the Baa Atoll, late afternoon you will take a tropical forest walk to enjoy sunset at the island beach which has been ranked in the world’s top 25 beaches. Don’t forget your torch!

Local Life

This morning you will meet the ladies of the local Women’s Development Committee (WDC). Island WDCs play an important role in mobilising local women, and providing an avenue for women to network, collaborate and implement initiatives for community development. Under their watchful gaze, you will prepare breakfast, learning how to make mashuni (a typical Maldivian breakfast dish comprising of tuna, onion, coconut, and chili) and roshi (flatbread). Sit together to share.

After lunch, visit Fulhadhoo’s coral nursery where you will learn the story behind the project and understand why coral rehabilitation projects are extremely important in the Maldives. You will witness firsthand the intricate process of coral propagation and discover the techniques used, such as fragment collection, nurturing, and monitoring the growth of new coral colonies.

This evening your guide will introduce you to the work of the Manta Trust. Providing an insight into their environmental monitoring and manta ray studies preparing you for your snorkeling tomorrow, when conditions are right you may be lucky enough to spot a manta ray!

Free Day

After breakfast, making the most of the quiet beautiful reefs in this area, take a further opportunity this morning to discover coral reefs that are teeming with fish and marine-life. Whilst never a guarantee you may be lucky enough to encounter manta rays which are often sighted in the atoll. Before entering the water, your guide will share the manta snorkeling code of conduct, ensuring the experience is memorable for both you and the manta ray.

In the afternoon, spend time giving back to the community that has welcomed you by participating in an island clean. The act of cleaning is a powerful reminder of the importance of responsible tourism and environmental stewardship.

Your reward will be a refreshing ocean swim!

Departure Day

Following an early breakfast transfer by scheduled speedboat to Male International Airport, where your tour ends.

FAQs

Is alcohol allowed in the Maldives?

No. Alcohol consumption in the Maldives is illegal. In private hotel resorts alcohol can be consumed, however on this trip we are staying in locally run guesthouses and no alcohol is allowed here. Subject to availability visits to resorts, where alcohol can be served legally, can be arranged.

Are bikinis allowed to be worn in the Maldives?

Bikinis are not allowed to be worn on local public beaches in the Maldives, however all of the accommodation offer private gardens and balconies and there are tourist beach areas on the islands where bikinis may be worn.

Can I bring a vape?

Travellers are requested not to bring vapes, vaporizer devices, e-cigarette parts, or associated accessories to the Maldives.
Should you arrive with a vape device it will be confiscated at the border and returned to you when you depart the country.

What time is the hotel check in on day one?

Check in is at midday on day one, but if you are arriving early we will try to arrange an early check in for you subject to availability.

Are children able to come on this trip?

Yes we are happy to accommodate children from age 12.

The rooms at the guest houses are single or twin/ double share, we may be able to arrange for a triple room - please contact us to request this if needed.
