Tour Summary:

Day 2: Tarangire National Park
Day 3: Lake Manyara National Park
Day 4- 8: Serengeti National Park
Day 9: Tanzania to Zanzibar
Day 10 & 11: Zanzibar
Day 12: Departure

You will track elephant herds across Tarangire, search for tree-climbing lions in Lake Manyara and stand at Olduvai Gorge where humankind’s story began.

Each day brings raw, unscripted encounters – the rumble of hooves during the Great Migration, the stillness before a lion’s dawn patrol, the hush of the Serengeti as the sun sinks behind acacia silhouettes.

In the Serengeti, you will rise with the light, venture deep into the wilderness and spend unhurried hours immersed in nature’s theatre. Picnic beneath endless skies, share stories around the campfire and fall asleep to the distant calls of the wild. This is not about ticking off wildlife sightings; it is about feeling the rhythm of the land and your place within it.

Then, just as the dust of the plains settles, you will trade safari for spice-scented air and turquoise seas in Zanzibar. You will wander powder-soft beaches, swim in warm Indian Ocean waters and embrace the slower pace of island life. It is a perfectly judged finale – a chance to reflect, recharge and savour the extraordinary contrasts of Tanzania.

Peter, Kenya born of Danish parents, grew up on a coffee farm where a love of wide open spaces started and where he learned bush craft from his African companions.

He was educated in Kenya before studying natural sciences in England. He then married and returned to Kenya with his wife Aletta.

With ambitions to be involved in Tourism he was employed briefly managing tented camps. One such camp belonging to Root and Leakey Safaris, contracted to provide Oilfield exploration teams, and it was this quirk of fate that determined many years to come.  Ethiopia became a new theatre of exploration and the chance to visit this country was exciting, and hungry for adventure, Peter and his Kenyan camp and camp crew drove to a remote and mysterious country little known to outsiders and with a King, Haile Selassie, “The Lion of Judah.” When revolution put an end to Peter’s brief sojourn in Ethiopia the die was cast for the next two decades of remote area logistical support and camp services in Sudan, East and West Africa, Yemen and the Arabian Gulf states . The circle was closed by returning to his roots and finally a migration to Tanzania to co-found a safari company, Hoopoe Safaris, which now operates in East Africa.

In the past two decades Hoopoe has been one of the pioneers in Tanzania community-based Tourism and increasingly involved in Conservation particularly advocacy during the industrial scale poaching of elephant. He has a passion for wildlife photography, running and mountain biking and cooking.

Training of the Hoopoe Safari guides and all that is good guiding is an essential and enjoyable part of Peter’s time.  Peter has a broad knowledge and shares his experiences not only as a teacher but as one who has experienced much and faced many challenges on a fast-changing East African stage.

An evening in front of the camp fire is a great time to share his stories and relax or to have animal behaviour on safari explained as part of the rich tapestry of interlinking and interdependent cycles of life on the savannas.

It is fitting that Hoopoe safaris has a bon mot, “A traveler without Knowledge is like a bird without wings”!

Location

Your adventure begins from the moment you land in Kilimanjaro International Airport in the north of the country, where you are transferred immediately to your accommodation to relax, refresh, and get ready for your journey through Tanzania.

From there, you’ll head westwards to Lake Manyara National Park and the Great Rift Valley, before you head into the wilderness of the Serengeti, far to the north of the country, not far from the border with Kenya. You will finish your adventure in Zanzibar.

FAQs

How much should I tip?

There is a strong tipping culture in Tanzania, but it can be hard to know exactly how much to tip for what service. Here are some guidelines as to what is generally expected of tips:

Safari driver/guide - US$20 per day as a total for the whole group on safari, not per person (i.e. $20 per car used per day).

In lodges - Service charges are almost always included in lodges on the Northern Safari Circuit. If clients wish to leave a tip, then there is usually a tip box provided at reception. Gratuities placed in the tip box are generally divided amongst the entire staff on a monthly basis. Tips are not normally given on receipt of meals and it is advised that if clients wish to leave a tip for services received, then they leave it in the tip box at the end of their stay. A guideline of US$5 per day is reasonable.

Porters - If someone carries your bag to/from your vehicle at a lodge, then a reasonable guideline is US$2.

What should I wear for safari?

· Should be comfortable, preferably not in bright colours.
· Shorts.
· Trousers for the evening (and day if very hot).
· Sleeved shirts (to roll down against the sun or insects).
· Comfortable boots or shoes.
· Walking boots (already broken in!), especially if walking or trekking.
· A fleece or sweater - the nights can be cool in the bush and Ngorongoro cold after dark.
· A good, wide brimmed, hat.
· Sunglasses and sun block/screen.
· At least 2 changes of clothing for safari.
· In the evenings, especially at Lodges, a change of informal, casual clothes for dinner.
If you are travelling during rainy season - usually November and April / May- a shower proof jacket is useful.

What is the climate like?

The long dry season lasts throughout June, July, August, September and October when rainfall is unusual, even on the islands. Temperatures vary hugely with altitude and location, but it's usually a fine, clear sky and sunny weather.

The rainy season is between April - May and November, it is usually short bursts of very heavy rain followed by sunshine. The rain doesn't usually last long, but can be heavy and so a shower proof jacket and walking boots rather than trainers are recommended.

What is the currency?

Tanzanian Shilling (TSHs) is the local currency but the US $ in cash is the preferred option.

Food options on safari?

Most camps and lodges will serve Western-style food, game lodges tend to offer a daily set menu with a limited selection, so if you are a vegetarian or have any other specific dietary requirements please let us know so we can advise our host.
