Overview

There are few countries on earth that can boast a landscape as beautiful and varied, a history so rich and long, or a culture so colourful and soulful as Ethiopia. A patchwork of land as varied as the weave of cultures that winds its way through the land, Ethiopia is truly a country like no other.

On the surface, it’s endless savannahs and blood-red sunsets, towering mountains and dramatic highlands and gorges, desolate plains and shifting deserts, winding rivers and vast lakes, and some of the most incredible wildlife in the world.

Look a little closer, and you’ll discover an endless list of tribes and peoples, who’s ancient traditions and customs are still practiced today. You’ll be startled by the unending warmth of the hospitality of everyone you meet.

You’ll also find a cuisine that is just starting to gain worldwide popularity, monuments and landmarks that speak of its proud cultural identity, with ancient obelisks and temples found in even the most unusual of places.

A journey to Ethiopia will live long in the memory of any traveller. Once you’ve left images of deep red sunsets will be burnt in your vision and the sound of Ethiopia’s natural rhythm will echo around your head – an itch that won’t be scratched until you return.

Ethiopia’s high season is in the first few months of the year, when the wildlife watching is at its best, the weather is at its clearest, and some of the countries most colourful festivals are on.

Any time from April to September is seriously hot, and it can be genuinely uncomfortable for foreigners.

The year ends with sunny skies and the country in bloom – a great time to visit if you want to check out some of the world-class trekking.
