Arrival Day

Welcome to Costa Rica. Upon arrival at San José International Airport, you’ll be met by your driver and transferred into the capital for your first night.

Surrounded by mountains and fertile valleys, San José offers a gentle introduction to the country. While many travellers simply pass through, it provides a fascinating glimpse into modern Costa Rican life, where colourful markets, lively neighbourhoods and local cafés sit beneath the backdrop of the Central Valley’s green hills.

After your journey, the remainder of the day is yours to relax and settle into the slower pace of life that defines Costa Rica. Perhaps enjoy a stroll nearby, sample your first Costa Rican coffee or simply unwind before your adventure begins in earnest tomorrow.

Tonight you’ll rest in comfortable surroundings ready for an early start as you head towards one of the country’s most remote and wildlife-rich regions.

Accommodation: Parque del Lago Boutique Hotel (or similar)

Meals: None

Journey to Tortuguero National Park

Today marks your first true immersion into Costa Rica’s natural world.

Leaving San José early, you’ll travel through the dramatic landscapes of Braulio Carrillo National Park. As the road descends from the highlands towards the Caribbean lowlands, you’ll witness an extraordinary transformation in scenery. Cloud forests gradually give way to dense tropical rainforest, while banana and pineapple plantations appear amongst the lush greenery.

After breakfast en route, you’ll board a boat and begin travelling through the waterways of Tortuguero National Park. Often described as Costa Rica’s Amazon, this remarkable region is accessible only by water or air. As you glide through jungle-fringed canals, your guide will begin introducing the area’s unique ecosystems and abundant wildlife.

Monkeys move through the canopy overhead, colourful birds flash between the trees and reptiles bask along the riverbanks. The sense of remoteness is immediate and captivating.

After arriving at your lodge, you’ll have time to settle into your surroundings before enjoying a guided nature walk. Surrounded by rainforest and wetlands, you’ll gain your first real insight into why Tortuguero is considered one of Costa Rica’s most important conservation areas.

Accommodation: Laguna Lodge Tortuguero (or similar)

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

Explore Tortuguero National Park

Wake to the sounds of the rainforest and prepare for a day immersed in one of Costa Rica’s most extraordinary wildlife habitats.

This morning you’ll head out onto the famous canals of Tortuguero. Travelling quietly by boat allows you to explore areas inaccessible by foot and offers some of the best wildlife viewing opportunities in the country. More than half of Costa Rica’s bird species have been recorded here, alongside monkeys, sloths, caimans, iguanas and countless other species.

Your guide will help you spot wildlife hidden amongst the vegetation while sharing stories about the delicate balance that sustains this remarkable ecosystem.

Later, you’ll visit the small village of Tortuguero. Life here revolves around the waterways, and the community’s close relationship with conservation has helped protect the region’s globally important turtle nesting beaches.

There will also be time to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the area, whether relaxing at the lodge, walking along the beach or simply taking in the sights and sounds of the rainforest around you.

The sea turtle nesting tour takes place between the 1st July and 31st October. (Turtle nesting tour can be arranged locally at an extra charge).

Local Farm Visit, Volcanoes and Hot Springs

Leaving the Caribbean coast behind, you’ll begin the journey towards the volcanic landscapes of northern Costa Rica.

Travelling back through the waterways and lowlands, you’ll eventually reach the fertile plains surrounding La Fortuna and Arenal Volcano. Along the way you’ll stop at Finca Sura, a working organic farm where local families produce pineapples, sugar cane and a variety of other crops using sustainable methods.

This is much more than a farm visit. It offers a genuine insight into rural Costa Rican life, allowing you to learn how tourism, conservation and agriculture work together to support local communities.

Continuing onwards, the iconic shape of Arenal Volcano begins to dominate the horizon. Once one of the world’s most active volcanoes, it remains one of Costa Rica’s most recognisable natural landmarks.

The remainder of the afternoon is free to enjoy the beautiful surroundings and relax after your journey.

Accommodation: Arenal Manoa Hot Springs Resort (or similar)

Waterfalls and Local Lunch

Today combines some of the most beautiful scenery in the country with meaningful local connections.

Your morning begins at the spectacular La Fortuna Waterfall. Reached via a trail descending through rainforest, the waterfall plunges dramatically into a natural pool surrounded by lush vegetation. The journey down allows time to appreciate both the scenery and the rich biodiversity of the area before reaching the base of the falls.

Following your visit, you’ll enjoy a traditional lunch hosted by the Rodríguez family. Set beside a river and prepared using local ingredients, this meal offers an authentic taste of Costa Rican hospitality and culture.

In the afternoon, you’ll explore Arenal Volcano National Park. Accompanied by your guide, you’ll walk across old lava fields and through regenerating rainforest while learning about the dramatic eruptions that shaped the region. The contrast between volcanic landscapes and thriving rainforest creates one of the country’s most fascinating environments.

Lake Cruise and Travel to Monteverde

Today you’ll leave the volcanic lowlands behind and journey towards the misty cloud forests of Monteverde.

Your route includes a scenic crossing of Lake Arenal, offering beautiful views of the surrounding hills and, on clear days, the distant volcano. This journey is not only practical but also one of the most picturesque transitions of the trip, as landscapes shift from tropical lowlands to cooler highland forests.

Upon arrival in Santa Elena, the gateway to Monteverde, you’ll notice a change in climate and atmosphere. The air is fresher, the vegetation denser, and the pace of life slower.

The remainder of the day is yours to settle in and explore at your own pace. You may wish to wander through the small town, visit local cafés or simply relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

The rest of the day is free for you to explore Monteverde at your own pace. You may choose to visit one of the region’s famous cloud forest reserves, where hanging bridges and forest trails offer the chance to spot unique wildlife such as hummingbirds, monkeys and elusive quetzals.

Optional Extra
For those seeking adventure, an optional canopy zip-line experience is available, allowing you to glide through the treetops and experience the forest from a completely different perspective.

En route, you’ll stop at the Tarcoles River, one of the country’s most famous wildlife locations. Boarding a boat with a local guide, you’ll explore the river and surrounding mangroves in search of enormous American crocodiles, some of the largest found anywhere in the Americas.

The river is also home to a remarkable variety of wildlife. Keep an eye out for monkeys in the trees, colourful birds overhead and reptiles basking along the riverbanks. Your guide will help bring the ecosystem to life while explaining the importance of the mangrove habitats that support so much biodiversity.

Later, continue to Jacó and your hotel overlooking the Pacific coastline. This evening, enjoy your first glimpse of Costa Rica’s western shores as the sun begins to set over the ocean.

Journey to Drake Bay

After breakfast you’ll continue south through some of Costa Rica’s most diverse landscapes. Travelling along the Pacific coast, you’ll pass through rainforest-covered hills, fertile valleys and the vast mangrove wetlands surrounding Sierpe.

The final stage of the journey takes you by boat into Drake Bay, a fitting arrival to one of the country’s most remote and biodiverse regions. As the coastline comes into view, you’ll quickly understand why so many nature lovers consider the Osa Peninsula one of Costa Rica’s greatest treasures.

Drake Bay sits on the edge of Corcovado National Park and offers access to some of the most pristine rainforest remaining in Central America. The area was famously described by National Geographic as one of the most biologically intense places on Earth.

After checking in, take time to enjoy the natural surroundings, listen to the sounds of the rainforest and prepare for the remarkable wildlife experiences that await over the coming days.

Corcovado National Park

Corcovado National Park protects an extraordinary concentration of wildlife and habitats, ranging from lowland rainforest and rivers to beaches and coastal ecosystems. Accompanied by a local guide, you’ll venture into this remarkable wilderness in search of some of Costa Rica’s most iconic species.

The park is home to monkeys, scarlet macaws, coatis, peccaries and tapirs, while the dense rainforest supports hundreds of bird, reptile and plant species. Every walk through Corcovado feels different, with wildlife encounters often occurring unexpectedly.

Beyond the wildlife itself, the experience offers a rare opportunity to immerse yourself in one of the last truly wild corners of Central America. Far removed from the more visited regions of the country, Corcovado provides a deeper understanding of Costa Rica’s commitment to conservation and biodiversity.

Sail to Caño Island

Today you’ll head out onto the Pacific Ocean to explore the protected waters surrounding Isla del Caño.

The journey to the island is an experience in itself. Dolphins are frequently spotted in these waters and, depending on the season, there is also the possibility of seeing whales, sea turtles and rays. The surrounding marine reserve contains some of the richest underwater ecosystems in Costa Rica.

Once at Isla del Caño, you’ll have the opportunity to snorkel in crystal-clear waters amongst colourful tropical fish and thriving marine life. The island itself also has a fascinating history, with pre-Columbian archaeological remains and stories linking it to pirates who once travelled these shores.

After a day spent exploring both above and below the water, return to Drake Bay and enjoy another evening surrounded by rainforest and ocean.

Travelling through the mangroves offers a fascinating insight into one of Costa Rica’s most important ecosystems.

Afterwards, you’ll continue by road to Manuel Antonio on the Central Pacific coast. Combining tropical beaches with rainforest-covered hillsides, this area offers a perfect contrast to the remote wilderness of the Osa Peninsula.

The remainder of the afternoon is free to relax and enjoy your hotel, perhaps spending time by the pool or taking your first walk along the nearby beaches.

Enjoy the crystal-clear waters lapping at the beautiful beaches, creating the perfect habitat for these protected animals. The beach of the Ostional Wildlife Reserve is a rare natural wonder, with thousands of sea turtles coming to lay their eggs in the black, volcanic sand between July and February. We choose destinations that are not the same as all the other tour companies out there, those that are emerging or have something special about them, that most people don’t know about, we work with local companies that employ real locals and we choose hotels that are sustainable and have a positive impact on their environment.

We always ensure the people we work with are committed to sustainability, it’s our mission to spread the wealth of tourism, to make sure that the money from tourism is kept in the local communities so that the destination can be developed and conserved as a beautiful place to visit.

What our travellers are saying...

FAQs

What clothes should I pack?

Lightweight cotton and linen clothing is recommended for most of the year with warmer clothes for cooler evenings. Waterproofing is necessary during the rainy season. Loose-fitting clothing is best. Wear neutral browns and greens for birding and wildlife viewing. Always bring mosquito repellent for both day and night.

Is this package suitable for children?

Yes, although the itinerary is particularly suited to adults and older children who enjoy wildlife, nature and active exploration. Some hikes, boat journeys and longer transfer days may be better suited to families with older children.

Are there any ziplining restrictions (optional add on)?

Maximum weight is: 136 kg (300 lb).
Maximum waist size to fit the harness: 117 cm (46 in).

Zip lining is not suitable for anyone with health issues such as back, neck, bone, or muscle problems, surgeries within the past year, or heart conditions.

The minimum age to participate is 5 years old, provided that the harness and other equipment can be properly adjusted, and it is up to the guides discretion if the child can travel alone on the zipline.

Is this trip private or am I joining a group?

This is a private itinerary designed specifically for you. Some excursions and transfers may operate on a shared basis with other travellers.

Can I amend this package?

Yes. Accommodation, trip duration, room types and activities can all be tailored to suit your preferences. Please include any requests when making your enquiry.

How much travelling is involved in this trip?

Costa Rica is compact but journeys can take time due to terrain and road conditions. Most road journeys range from 2-5 hours, with several scenic boat transfers included.

Are flights included?

No. International flights are not included. Please let us know if you need a price with flights.

How demanding are the activities?

This itinerary is best described as moderate. Most activities involve gentle walking, wildlife viewing and sightseeing. Some excursions include uneven trails, steps and natural terrain, particularly at La Fortuna Waterfall and Corcovado National Park.

When is the best time to travel for the best weather?

December to April generally offers the driest conditions and most sunshine. However, the green season from May to November brings lush landscapes, fewer visitors and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, making Costa Rica rewarding throughout the year.
