Day 14: Buenos Aires

Beginning in Buenos Aires, you’ll ease into the rhythm of Argentina culture, exploring its neighbourhoods, flavours and iconic tango scene before travelling south into Patagonia’s vast and untamed wilderness.

In Patagonia, the scenery shifts dramatically to glaciers, open plains and wide skies. Here, you’ll not only witness the immense beauty of the Perito Moreno Glacier but also step into a slower, more authentic way of life with a stay on a traditional working estancia. This is a rare opportunity to connect with Patagonia beyond the usual highlights, experiencing the landscape and lifestyle first-hand.

The journey continues north to Mendoza, where the pace softens among vineyards at the foot of the Andes. Through immersive wine experiences and mountain excursions, you’ll gain insight into the region’s identity and natural beauty. Finally, in Iguazu Falls, the landscape transforms once more into lush rainforest and thundering waterfalls, offering a powerful and unforgettable finale before returning to Buenos Aires.

This is a private itinerary but on some experiences throughout the tour you may join a small group.

Arrival in Buenos Aires

Upon arrival, you will be welcomed and transferred into the leafy Palermo district — one of Buenos Aires’ most creative and relaxed neighbourhoods. Wide jacaranda-lined streets, independent boutiques and pavement cafés create an effortless first impression.

The afternoon is yours to settle in and explore at your own pace.

You might stroll through Palermo Soho’s design shops, linger over a glass of Malbec, or simply unwind in preparation for the adventure ahead.

Buenos Aires: Culture & Tango

This morning, you will discover why Buenos Aires is often called the “Paris of South America”.

Your guide will provide the perfect introduction to four of the city’s most distinctive districts, offering a fascinating insight into its history, contrasts and culture. You will experience the highlights of Buenos Aires, including political centers, artist meccas and barrios rich in European architecture.

You will become acquainted with the foundation site of the capital at Plaza de Mayo, undisputedly Buenos Aires’ political heart.

Next, delve into one of the oldest districts, Parque Lezama and La Boca in the south, where artists’ ateliers and brightly coloured houses jostle for space; before moving on to Plaza San Martin and Retiro. Here, notice the transformation of Buenos Aires’ architecture from the rambling style of the south of the city to the European-influenced residential quarters of the 19th century.

Finally, you will come face to face with the sophisticated neighbourhood of Recoleta, whose buildings and avenues were inspired by the French. A visit to the world-famous Recoleta Cemetery where Evita Peron is buried is included.

This evening experience Tango the local way, there are many milongas (places where local “porteños” dance tango), scattered throughout the different neighbourhoods, a different milonga opens every night of the week. Old lounges, cafes or neighbourhood clubs host a milonga every night where everyone can walk the runway turning counter clockwise.

Your guide will meet you at your hotel and travel with you to one Milonga. Later this evening try out your dancing technique at a traditional Milonga (Tango bar), in a fun and laid back environment.

Once on the dance floor, the couples dance in a counter clockwise direction and never pass the couple in front (it is not a race). That is called social sense. There are even several lanes/circles to make better use of the space. You should never pass someone else in the middle of the dance. Beginner dancers often dance in the inner circles so as not to disturb the circulation of those who dance better (or think they do).

Street Food & Local Flavours

Today you will explore Buenos Aires through its flavours. In atmospheric San Telmo, your guide will introduce you to the street food that defines everyday Argentine life.

You will bite into freshly baked empanadas, taste the smoky simplicity of choripán straight from the grill, and sample Argentina’s distinctive take on pizza — thick, indulgent and unapologetically generous with cheese. The experience ends on a sweet note with artisan gelato, a legacy of Italian immigration that still shapes the city’s culinary identity.

The afternoon and evening are yours to enjoy at leisure. You may browse antique markets, return to a favourite neighbourhood, or enjoy a final evening soaking up the city’s infectious energy.

Once at “Bajo de las Sombras” Port, you will board a boat to cross Lake Rico, after 10 minutes you will reach the impressive southern wall of the Perito Moreno Glacier.

Upon disembarking at Bahía Puma, just 500 meters from the glacier, you will be welcomed by your expert mountain guides. From there, the tour begins with an approximately one-hour hike along the lake’s shore and then up the moraine beside the ice (a terrain of rocks and loose soil).

When reaching the edge of the glacier, with its stunning blue hues, you will meet your glacier guide to explore this frozen paradise, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981 for about an hour.

During the hike, you’ll be able to admire the typical and ever-changing glacier formations such as deep crevasses, blue sinkholes, massive seracs, and turquoise lagoons.

At the end of the ice trek, you will visit the base of the waterfall before returning along the lateral moraine to reach Bahía Puma once again. From there, you’ll board the boat back to Bajo de las Sombras Port, keeping an eye on the glacier’s wall in case it surprises you with a thunderous ice calving.

Estancia Experience

Today you will venture into the depths of Patagonia on a winding gravel road, affectionately known as ‘The road to the estancias’.

Your destination is Estancia Nibepo Aike and as you ride along, you will encounter a fascinating array of condors, foxes and hares. As Cerro Frias comes into view, you know that you are close to your destination.

Set within 12,000 hectares amid the beautiful backdrop of the mountainous Los Glaciares National Park, this traditional estancia is the epitome of ‘Old Patagonia’. Dating back to the beginning of the 20th century the estancia enjoys breath-taking, uninterrupted views across Lake Argentino and the National Park beyond.

On arrival at the estancia enjoy a warm welcome and some homemade cakes and pastries; a perfect start to this amazing adventure and your first opportunity to soak up the magnificent sights that surround you.

After indulging in the freshly prepared treats, you are fuelled up and ready to leave the comfort of the estancia and begin a guided walk. You will learn about this typical Patagonian ranch that was formerly dedicated to sheep production and has become the most prestigious Hereford herd in these latitudes and which also keeps a sheep flock.

At the end of the walk, gather outside the small wooden door of the shearing shed; this is a fantastic opportunity to see skilled hands at work and understand the process of getting the fleece carefully and kindly from the sheep, ready to be transported..

Immerse yourself in this authentic experience of life on an estancia as you have a go at milking the cows, or perhaps try herding some sheep. Watch in awe as the dexterous gauchos guide their cattle across the ranch and disappear over the horizon.

Lunch will be served at the “Quincho”, while our host demonstrates how to cook the traditional local specialty.

The remainder of the day is at leisure.

You may choose to explore the surrounding terrain on horseback, riding across open plains with sweeping views towards the mountains, or set out on foot along quiet trails that reveal the estancia’s remote beauty.

Throughout the day, you’ll have the opportunity to take part in authentic rural activities, from observing traditional sheep shearing to learning more about the daily life of the gauchos who call this land home. Time moves slowly here, allowing you to engage as much or as little as you wish, with moments to simply pause and take in the vast Patagonian scenery.

Between activities, return to the ranch house to relax, enjoy the welcoming atmosphere and share meals prepared using local ingredients. This is a day that offers both gentle adventure and genuine connection to place, providing a deeper understanding of Patagonia’s culture and way of life.

Iguazú Falls: The Argentine Side & Boat Experience

Today you will step into Iguazú National Park with your private guide, where walkways weave through rainforest and along the edge of vast cascading waters. Butterflies drift through humid air as the distant roar of the falls grows louder with every step.

You will explore both the Upper and Lower circuits, offering dramatically different perspectives. From above, you will watch sheets of water spill over jungle-fringed cliffs. From below, you will feel the raw power of the falls as spray rises into the air and rainbows form in the mist.

The highlight is Devil’s Throat – this can be reached by either walking or via Iguazu’s Ecological Train, specifically designed for the national park, with open-sided cars that allow full appreciation of the breath-taking scenery and diverse flora and fauna.

This afternoon experience the full force of the falls with a thrilling exploration of the Lower Iguazú River and Central Falls. Taking a powerful zodiac boat, you will approach the Tres Mosqueteros Falls and the dramatic Devil’s Throat. These ‘up close and personal’ boat rides are the only true way to feel first-hand the immensity of this natural phenomenon.

The tour begins with an adventurous 8km drive aboard an open-top 4×4 vehicle into the jungle, a great way to admire the flora and fauna of the rainforest before reaching the river, and the Falls.

You will make your way to Macuco pier, where you will embark on a motor boat to navigate the 6 km of Lower Iguazú River, and 2 km of rapids until we reach Iguazú. First, you visit San Martin Island, before sailing to Los Tres Mosqueteros (The Three Musketeers) Falls and then the highlight of any navigation around Iguazú, the awesome Devil’s Throat.

The zodiac will get as close as possible to the foot of the main drop, allowing you to immerse in the ferocious power created by the feeding streams, culminating in the Central Falls.

Be prepared to get thoroughly wet during this adrenaline-packed adventure.

Once nicely soaked and fully in awe, we go on to descend the rapids and return to the shores.

Return late afternoon, with the evening at leisure.
