Arrival in Quito

Your journey begins as you arrive in Quito, Ecuador’s capital city, perched high in the Andes at 2,850m (9,350ft). After clearing customs, you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel. Quito’s historic centre is one of the best-preserved in South America, earning it UNESCO World Heritage status. The city is a fascinating mix of colonial-era buildings, bustling markets, and lively plazas framed by the dramatic Andean landscape.

Depending on your arrival time, you may wish to take a short stroll near your hotel, soaking in the cool mountain air and the vibrant energy of Quito’s streets. The city has a rich culinary scene, offering everything from casual empanada stands to gourmet Ecuadorian cuisine, so a relaxed dinner at a local restaurant is a great way to start your trip.

This first evening is all about rest and acclimatisation. Quito sits at a high altitude, so taking it easy upon arrival helps you adjust. Your comfortable accommodation is centrally located, making it a perfect base for exploring the city in the coming days.

Quito City Tour & Cooking Class

Today you will start your day with a tour a Quinto. Starting at the Independence Square, you’ll have the opportunity to admire the architectural beauty of Quito alongside the vibrant energy of its people. From here, you can explore the colonial church of San Francisco, which spans an entire street block and boasts a stunningly ornate altar, including an antique sculptural masterpiece of Quito’s Madonna.

Next, take in the grandeur of the Carondelet Presidential Palace, the former Archbishop’s Palace, and the Jesuit church of La Compañía de Jesús. The latter is the prime example of Latin American Baroque architecture. Its intricately carved volcanic rock façade and interior, entirely gilded in gold leaf, will undoubtedly impress you, showcasing a rich blend of Spanish, Indigenous, Moorish, Italian, and Flemish influences.

To further enhance your experience, we’ll offer you a bird’s-eye view of the city. You’ll board a cable car that will take you from Quito, situated at 3,117 meters above sea level, to a lookout on the windy highlands of the Rucu Pichincha volcano, at 3,947 meters. From this vantage point, you’ll understand why Quito’s location has been so coveted throughout history, from the Inca to the Spanish empires.

Your guide will then take you to a traditional market and its surroundings, where you can explore the fresh, local products that will be used in your cooking class. The experience continues at a charming restaurant housed in a beautifully restored colonial building in the heart of the city. During the class, you’ll learn to prepare three traditional dishes with a modern twist, which you’ll be able to recreate at home. Get ready for a day filled with vibrant sights, flavours, and aromas. At the end of your culinary adventure, you’ll enjoy the delicious meal you’ve prepared.

Middle of the World & Hacienda Experience

This morning, step into the footsteps of 18th-century explorers as you visit the Middle of the World (Mitad del Mundo). This famous site marks the equator, where you can stand with one foot in each hemisphere. The interactive Inti Ñan Museum nearby offers quirky experiments demonstrating the unique gravitational effects at the equator—watch water swirl in opposite directions or balance an egg on a nail!

Next, you’ll head to an agave distillery, where you’ll learn about Ecuador’s traditional spirit, crafted from the agave plant. Sample different varieties and discover the cultural significance of this drink, which has been part of Andean traditions for centuries.

In the evening, settle into Hacienda San Luis, a charming Andean retreat. Enjoy a guided night walk by torchlight, where you’ll listen to local legends and gaze at the snow-capped Cayambe volcano under a starry sky. Gather around a bonfire, sip on canelazo (a warm spiced drink), and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the Ecuadorian highlands.

Otavalo Market & Cuicocha Lagoon

Begin the day with a scenic drive to Otavalo, home to South America’s most famous indigenous market. Wander through vibrant stalls brimming with colourful textiles, handcrafted jewellery, and intricate leather goods. You’ll have time to meet local artisans and perhaps pick up a handwoven alpaca scarf or a unique souvenir.

A short drive away is Cotacachi, a town renowned for its high-quality leather craftsmanship. Browse beautifully made handbags, shoes, and jackets, all crafted by skilled artisans. The town’s picturesque setting at the base of a volcano adds to its charm.

In the afternoon, visit Cuicocha Lagoon, a stunning crater lake set within a collapsed volcanic caldera. Take a short hike along the rim for breathtaking views of the turquoise water below. If time allows, you can opt for a boat ride across the lagoon, where you might spot bubbling gas vents from the dormant volcano.

Journey to the Amazon

This morning, you will set off towards the upper Amazon, travelling along a scenic route that takes you from the majestic Andes highlands down into the Amazon region (approx 4-5hrs). Along the way, there will be plenty of opportunities to stop for photographs, capturing the breath taking views of lush green valleys and shimmering waterfalls.

Upon arrival at Suchipakari, our friendly staff will be there to assist with your luggage as you arrive. Once at the lodge, you will be greeted with a refreshing cocktail, and the lodge manager will provide a brief orientation about the facilities  to make the most of your time in the Amazon. You will then be shown to your room, where you can take a moment to relax and settle in.

After settling in, a naturalist guide will introduce you to the tropical rainforest, Amazon SPA therapies, and lodge operations, providing essential insights for your adventure. You will then enjoy a delicious meal featuring local flavours and fresh ingredients.

In the afternoon, explore the Ceibo Ecological Trail, named after the ancient Ceibo tree, the most majestic among the many species you will encounter. Along the way, discover strangler figs, medicinal plants, and diverse wildlife as your guide shares expert knowledge about the rainforest’s flora and fauna. After the hike, prepare for a tubing experience by gearing up with swimsuits, sandals, and life jackets. Walk to a river beach, where your guide will demonstrate paddling techniques before you drift downstream, taking in the tranquil surroundings.

After dinner, venture into the rainforest at night with a flashlight and rubber boots for a guided walk through the nocturnal world. Your guide will lead you in search of caimans, amphibians, bats, owls, and elusive night monkeys, choosing the best route through the forest, swamp, or lagoon to maximise wildlife sightings.

Amazon Adventures

Awaken to the sounds of the rainforest and set off on an early morning canoe ride to a parrot clay lick. Hundreds of vibrant parrots and parakeets gather here, creating a dazzling display of colour and sound.

Visit the Animal Rescue Centre for a guided tour, where you’ll learn about conservation efforts and meet rescued animals, including the prehistoric Hoatzin bird, woolly monkeys, macaws, parrots, toucans, anacondas, and squirrel monkeys. Enjoy a box lunch surrounded by nature before immersing yourself in Kichwa culture with a visit to a local family. Observe a traditional blowgun demonstration and learn how to prepare La Chicha de Yuca, a staple drink of the rainforest.

End the day with a visit to Caiman’s Lagoon on Anaconda Island, searching for these fascinating reptiles as you explore the area. If you wish, stop in town to admire local ceramic crafts before returning to the lodge for a relaxing evening.

Papallacta Hot Springs & Return to Quito

Before leaving the Amazon, take an optional morning jungle walk (bookable locally), a final opportunity to spot exotic wildlife. Then, journey back into the Andes, stopping at Papallacta, a scenic mountain retreat famous for its thermal hot springs.

Nestled in a misty valley, the natural pools of Papallacta offer a rejuvenating soak, surrounded by lush green hills. The mineral-rich waters are known for their healing properties—an ideal way to unwind after your jungle adventure.

In the afternoon, return to Quito for a restful evening before your Galapagos adventure begins.

Galapagos Islands!

This morning you’llbe transferred from your hotel to Quito airport. Once at the departures hall, head to the Galapagos Government Council counter to purchase the Transit Control Card . Be sure to keep this card safe, as it must be presented again upon your return. Afterward, your luggage will be inspected to ensure that no foreign plants or animals are brought to the islands.

Next, you’ll board your flight to Baltra Island. Upon arrival, authorities will collect the Galapagos National Park entrance fee.

At Baltra airport, a native guide will meet you and accompany you on a one-hour journey to your hotel on Santa Cruz Island. Along the way, you’ll visit the highlands of Santa Cruz, where you’ll see the Twin Craters—impressive lava formations created by volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago and now covered in lush forest ecosystems. In this area, you may also spot the endemic woodpecker finch, a unique bird that uses tools to find food, often considered a key example of evolution.

Your next stop will be a ranch that is home to the famous giant Galapagos tortoises. These magnificent creatures roam beyond the official boundaries of the National Park, often entering private properties to take mud baths, feast on fallen fruit, and carry birds on their shells.

You’ll enjoy lunch with a view of these incredible tortoises before transferring to your hotel in Puerto Ayora town.

Tour by boat

Today, you will embark on an unforgettable tour by boat. Depending on daily availability, your destination may include A) North Seymour Islet, B) Bartolomé, C) South Plaza, or D) Santa Fe Island.

A) North Seymour Islet
North Seymour is a true natural paradise, home to vibrant seabird colonies, including the fearless blue-footed boobies and frigatebirds, as well as Galapagos sea lions and endemic land iguanas. You’ll have the chance to swim in the clear waters alongside the sea lions, who form the largest colony of the archipelago right on this beach.

B) Bartolomé Island
Bartolomé is one of the most remarkable sites in the Galapagos. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by the sight of a towering pinnacle rising dramatically from the bay. Enjoy breath taking views from various angles before disembarking and climbing to the top of the islet. Along the way, you may encounter lava lizards, hawks, and endemic snakes. The view from the top is simply awe-inspiring.

C) South Plaza Islet
When you land on South Plaza, you’ll be greeted by a striking landscape of red and purple hues, covered in vibrant Sesuvium, contrasting with the tall prickly pear cacti that populate the island. Home to a unique colony of hybrid iguanas, South Plaza offers an unparalleled experience. The island is teeming with life, including over 1,000 sea lions, nesting seabirds such as blue-footed boobies, shearwaters, and red-billed tropicbirds. The lush cactus forests also provide food and nesting sites for Darwin’s finches.

D) Santa Fe Island
Step back in time with a visit to Santa Fe Island, one of the oldest islands in the Galapagos, estimated to be between 4 to 4.5 million years old. This age makes Santa Fe particularly unique in terms of natural history. The island is home to a range of endemic species not found anywhere else in the world. The island’s picturesque turquoise bay, surrounded by towering cactus forests, provides a stunning backdrop for the incredible wildlife you’ll encounter. Santa Fe supports the highest variety of endemic species in the Galapagos, making it a true natural wonder.

Santa Cruz Highlights

Today, after breakfast, you’ll embark on an exciting exploration of some of the most sought-after spots on Santa Cruz Island. Your day begins with a hike through a tropical dry forest towards Tortuga Bay, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, as recognised by Condé Nast magazine. Tortuga Bay features a vast expanse of pristine white sand, named after its role as a popular nesting site for black turtles and marine iguanas.

While swimming at the first, larger beach is not recommended (though experienced local surfers can be seen riding the waves), this area is perfect for birdwatching and sunbathing in the warm sun. If you’d like to cool off, the second beach further along the way offers a sheltered bay surrounded by lush red mangroves, where the calm waters are ideal for swimming and snorkelling (snorkel gear provided). You’ll also have the chance to kayak around the bay before making your way back to town.

After a well-deserved lunch, you’ll head to the dock to catch a water taxi that will take you across the bay to Punta Estrada. A short, 5-minute boat ride will bring you to this fascinating spot, where a German family settled in the 1940s to escape Nazism and live a peaceful life as castaways. Some of their original volcanic rock houses are still standing today. The nearby beach, Playa de los Alemanes (German Beach), is now a popular spot for both locals and visitors.

You’ll have some time to relax on this tranquil beach or take a dip in its calm waters, which are perfect for snorkelling. The waters offer great opportunities to observe marine life, including stingrays, sharks, tortoises, and more.

Next, you’ll follow an easy trail to the famous Las Grietas (The Cracks), a stunning natural feature formed by water-filled fissures cutting through the peninsula. The varied scenery along the way includes colourful salt ponds, evergreen mangroves, and candelabra cacti. Las Grietas is a popular swimming and snorkelling spot where you can dive into the cool waters or leap off the cliffs. It’s a unique experience to swim between the dramatic red and black lava walls.

After an unforgettable day of exploration, you’ll return to Puerto Ayora.

Galapagos Cruise

The route you will take offers an unforgettable 5-day adventure through the remote western Galápagos Islands, taking you around the largest island, Isabela, and into the untouched wilderness of Fernandina. This route gives you the rare chance to witness nature at its most pristine, where volcanic landscapes meet rich marine life. As you navigate these isolated islands, you’ll experience first-hand the extraordinary wildlife and stunning scenery that make the Galápagos so unique.

Your journey begins with a visit to Isabela’s lush highlands, where misty forests provide a striking contrast to the island’s rugged volcanic coast. One of the route’s highlights is navigating a unique tidal channel, where whitetip reef sharks and graceful rays glide through the crystal-clear waters. What’s the best time to visit Ecuador?

The Galapagos remains a year-round destination with its own unique experiences, regardless of the season.

For the mainland the dry season is from June to September, though the weather can vary depending on the region (Amazon, or highlands). Travelling outside the dry season to Ecuador can still be worth it, especially for those seeking fewer crowds and a more tranquil experience. While the wet season (October to May) brings more rain, the lush landscapes are beautiful, and wildlife, particularly in the Amazon, is abundant.

What does a day look like onboard the cruise?

- The days onboard Galapagos cruises normally begin early to make the most out of your time on the islands. Wake up call is around 7 am unless activities start earlier.
- At 7:30 you are served breakfast in the dining room, and at 8:00 we start disembarking to the designated excursion site.
- Upon returning on board you enjoy a snack or lunch (depending on the duration of the morning programme). We will often navigate towards the next site on the itinerary while you are enjoying lunch.
- Between 2 and 3 pm, disembarking for the afternoon adventure will begin.
- After returning on board between 5 and 6, you have time to freshen up and relax before dinner is served at 7.
- During or after dinner the boat starts moving again to make sure you’ll wake up to a different visit site.

What are the meals like on the cruise?

The onboard dining experience features a daily rotating menu, offering fresh and healthy meals. Breakfast options include eggs, pancakes, fruit, and cereals. Lunch and dinner include a variety of entrees, mains, and desserts, with a focus on rice, pasta, lean proteins, and colourful vegetables. Fresh fruit juices and water accompany every meal, while alcoholic beverages and sodas are available on request, with charges added to your cabin bill. This ensures a delightful culinary journey for all guests.

Why is only Monday and Saturday departure dates available for this experience?

This experience departs on a Monday & Saturday only to align with cruise departure times. If this does not suite your requirements, please email hello@nitgb.com and we can discuss an alternative that works for you.  

How much is the Galapagos transit card?

Currently the Galapagos transit card is €20 per person. You can only buy this at the airport and you must pay in cash.

How much is the Galapagos National Park entrance fee?

On arrival in Galapagos you must pay the The Galápagos National Park entrance fee of $200 for non-Ecuadorian adults and $100 for children.

Which domestic flights are needed in this package?

Domestic flights within Ecuador are not included and will need to be booked separately.
