Hippocrates Fitness & Wellness Retreats are dedicated to encourage a healthy lifestyle. The week is designed around a variety of conventional fitness activities/classes but also incorporates activities which will allow you to absorb the local culture and attractions. It is not your standard three fitness classes a day type retreat, there is just as much focus on wellness and adventure as there is on fitness. You will be given your own bicycle for the week and you will be encouraged to go out and explore the area whenever you feel like.

The accommodation and base for the retreat is oozing with Greek culture. It is set in the Asklipion Valley, where Hippocrates practised in the first hospital and developed the Hippocratic Oath. Each room in the guest house has its own ensuite bathroom, and the majority have a terrace or balcony with breath taking views. Whether you’re a single traveller or travelling with a friend or partner, you will definitely feel at home at the family run Asklipion Valley Guest House.

The vast range of activities on offer includes a guided bike ride along picturesque tracks and roads to the island’s natural spa at Therma beach, here you can bathe in the naturally warmed waters with its revitalising minerals. You’ll also take a guided hike to the highest point of the island, Dikeos mountain, and visit Zia, one of the most picturesque villages of the island, as well as Kos Natural Park, with its spectacular landscapes and amazing views over Kos town and across the Aegean Sea to the islands of Kalymnos and Pserimos.

There is also a day where you can experience an activity of your choice, or you can just take the time to relax or go sightseeing on your bike.  The options include horse riding, Stand Up Paddle-board, Yoga,Windsurfing or why not have a pamper day at the traditional Hamam located in the village of Tigaki.

Gilly

Gilly has lived on the beautiful Greek Island of Kos since 2018 after holidaying here for 25 years as a child and young adult. She left her career as a serving soldier to embark on her dream life creating the ultimate fitness & wellness retreat on the island which was the birthplace of Hippocrates. Gilly is a qualified fitness instructor dedicated to helping clients reach their health and fitness goals and giving them the opportunity to live their most healthy and adventurous life. She is looking forward to welcoming you and hosting you for a week of fitness activities as challenging as you want to make it, and showing you around her adopted home.

Experience Itinerary

Arrival day and introductions

Arrive at Kos Airport where you will have a transfer waiting for you to take you to the Asklipion Valley Guest House, approximately 30- 45 minutes away. 

When you arrive you will be greeted by Gilly your host and she will show you to your accommodation for the week. You will have time to get settled and to orientate. She will also introduce you to your allocated bicycle for the week. 

At approximately 6pm the group will sit down for the first evening meal and Gilly will introduce you to your fitness instructor/assistance host. At this time you will meet your fellow retreaters and will be given a detailed plan for the exciting week ahead.

Free day to explore or take part in some fitness classes

There will be a fitness class taking place at 8am if you choose to take part, please remember nothing is mandatory, everything is voluntarytake part in what takes your fancy. 

Following the class, a buffet breakfast will be available between the hours of 9am and 10am (don’t worry if you take a little longer). 

Other than lunch nothing else is scheduled until 5pm, where there will be an evening of fitness class, sunset yoga/pilates and an evening meal. Take the free time to go and explore the local sites if you wish – the Asklipion is only a stones throw away.

Bike ride to thermal springs of Therma

We will have an early start on Day 3 if you wish to join us for a guided bike ride to the Thermal springs of Kos. The bike ride in total is approximately 30km, however half way we break our journey to take the opportunity to relax and soak up the healing properties of the naturally heated thermal springs. The route itself will take us through scenic countryside and some quaint villages including Platani which is the Turkish settlement on the island. 

After returning to the Guest House for lunch, there will be some time for you to relax and then there will be an evening of fitness classes if you choose to join in. There will be a sunset pilates/yoga class taking place- this is always an amazing way to finish the day!

Are you an early riser? If you like early mornings, you will love Day 4’s Sunrise pilates/yoga classwhat an invigoratng way to start the day! There are a selection of fitness classes to choose from throughout the day and delicious home cooked meals together. There is also an opportunity to go and do some local exploring on your bike if you wish – Ask Gilly or Anastasia (the Guest house Owner) for some route  recommendations.

Hike Mount Dikeos

Another early start if you wish – we want to start the hike up Mount Dikeos before it gets too hot. So breakfast is highly recommended and then we will jump in the organised transport to the mountain Village of Zia, from where we will begin our hike up to the highest point of the island to experience the incredible views. The hike is a moderate level, and for those of you who enjoy a trail run, you can set off ahead, along the trail, don’t worry it’s reasonably well signposted. When we return to Zia, you will have time to enjoy the village, do some shopping for souvenirs or local produce, have a coffee , perhaps try a ‘turkish coffee’, maybe visit the nature park, see what takes your fancy. After leaving Zia, we will return back to the Asklipion Valley Guest House. During the evening there will be a selection of fitness classes available.

Free day for the activity day of your choice

We are not waking up too early today, there will be breakfast and a fitness class to start the day and then it’s time to get on the way if you have booked an optional activity for today.

Today is a free day, but on your arrival day Gilly will have given you lots of options in case you want to branch out, do something different  or try something new.

So you may have booked one of the optional activities at a small extra cost, with Gilly at the beginning of the week.

The options include horse riding at sunset which means the rest of the day is yours. Or you may have chosen to do some SUP Yoga, which means you will be taken to one of the beaches in the south of the island  at the incredible village of Kefalos. You may want to learn something new, such as  taking a  beginners windsurfing lesson, or if you are a seasoned windsurfer,  rental of the equipment can be arranged; Kos is famous of windsurfing. Or if you feel you have done enough exercise and a bit of pampering is in order, that’s where the traditional hammam comes in. There are several packages available to choose from at this traditional turkish bath, and you could decide to spend an hour or the whole day there. Or you may decide that you want to have total r&r, in which case we can recommend lovely local beaches for you to enjoy.

Last day of fitness

Today is the last day of activities, so we will start the day off right with sunrise pilates or yoga! Then, throughout the day there will be a selection of fitness classes. However the classes will finish early as we will head to Kos town for our last evening meal. We will choose a local authentic taverna by the water’s edge at Kos harbour. This is also a great opportunity to shop for those last minute gifts to take home.

Departure and goodbyes

Departure day, it’s time to say farewell before you hop on to your transfer to the airport. We hope that you have enjoyed your week of wellness, fitness and immersion into the Greek way of life, we are sure you will have made new friends and will go home refreshed and revitalised.

Location Information

The accommodation and base for the retreat is in the Greek island of Kos. It is set in the Asklipion Valley, the Asklipion being the first hospital where Hippocrates created the Medical Oath.

The guest house is situated in a traditional paradise surrounded by many olive and fruit trees. You’ll love walking among the sage and thyme bushes, following goat paths to discover hidden canyons and old watermills. There’s a secluded sandy beach not far from the property with a cozy ‘taverna’ that serves fresh fish every day. The whole area is ideal for hiking, especially along the goat paths, which reach deep into the island’s nature-filled canyons.

The traditional Platani village is nearby with its traditional market where you can enjoy the village’s famous Turkish cuisine (Kos is very close to Turkey and still boasts a strong Ottoman influence). The nearby Asklepeion is of course a major historical and archeological attraction just beside the property and definite
