Your guide to Portugal: best time to go

There are many reasons why Portugal remains a great year-round destination. From its fantastic climate to wide array of cultural events and festivals, it’s the dream location whether you’re a culture vulture, beach bum or sports fanatic.

But whatever your reason to visit, have a look at the best time to travel as when you go just might dictate how your holiday works out. For better or for worse.

What’s the weather like in Portugal?

The weather in Portugal can have a big impact on your plans so it’s important to check if your plans match with when you hope to travel.

Summer (June to September)

If you’re a fan of heat, this is your time! Sun-filled days and the average temperature around 30 degrees Celsius make Portugal’s coastal towns the place to be. However, you’ll find otherwise affordable prices rise dramatically in the period and the resorts and towns are at their busiest (August is a holiday month in Portugal.

And if you’re one for activities, sports and sightseeing, unless it’s surfing, you’ll find it’s just a bit too hot to make the most of the great outdoors.

Spring & Autumn (April, May or October)

In our opinion, quite possibly the best time to go. Warm but not too hot makes it great for getting outside and exploring – from hiking & cycling in the mountains, sightseeing in the vibrant cities to waterfront lunches. You’ll also experience fewer crowds too.

Winter (November to March)

Although you’ll hear it referred to as the rainy season, the months tend to be dry and you’ll often have crisp sunny days to enjoy. However, the average temperature changes throughout the country; mild in the south, pleasant enough in the centre but cold in the north. Don’t forget your layers!

Best time if you love water

Stunning coastlines, clear waters, world-class surf spots – Portugal won’t let you down. Average water temperatures can be around 17 degrees Celsius in spring, rising to mid-20s by the summer.

But fear not! If you plan to surf, most surf schools will kit you out with a wetsuit to keep you warm whatever the weather.

If you want to party like a local

Visit during the local festivals and you’re sure to come back with more than just photos – meet the locals, immerse yourself in the culture and take home memories that last forever…

  • Carnival (February/March): each city will have their own way to celebrate but colourful costumes and street parades are guaranteed
  • Saint’s Festivals (June): although the dates can change from city to city due to their respective Saints, the energy and street parties remain just as lively

Portugal is also host to some not to be missed music festivals, from NOS Alive and NOS Primavera Sound for rock & indie fans to NEOPOP Electronic for the dancers. These usually take place in spring and summer but tickets go on sale well in advance.
