5 top tips to enhance your sports holiday
Sports holidays are more popular than ever. For those who thrive on being challenged they offer the perfect balance between relaxation, socializing and fitness. Gym-a-phobes, hear me out. Sports holidays don’t have to be a chore. They can include holidays like horse riding, surfing or scuba diving. The options really are endless and rewarding.
Read my top 5 tips for sports holidays to maximize what you get out of your holiday.
1. Keep hydrated
The human body, though pretty amazing, has a few kinks to work out. For starters, by the time that we feel thirsty, we are already dehydrated. Avoid headaches, lack of concentration and fatigue by drinking water before, during and after exercise.
Sugary energy drinks are not the answer. They have a time and a place (late night exam crammers) but do little more than giving you a burst of artificial energy and then leave you feeling drained. Stick with your loyal old friend: H20.
2. Look after your feet
Blisters are the worst. Annoying, painful and (let’s face it) a rather messy and ugly affair. I know I’d rather be focusing on stunning views than dragging my sore feet along the floor.
A good pair of running or walking socks, designed to prevent rubbing, can make the world of difference. Who knew that socks could be so clever? And of course, stick a pack of blister plasters in your bag, just in case.on stunning views than how much pain I was in. Twice a day, for around a week before you set off, dab surgical spirit onto a piece of cotton wool and rub in a circular motion on the soles of your feet. This will toughen up soft skin and give you better natural protection against rubbing shoes.
3.Prepare for all weather conditions
Ok. I admit it. Your thickest fleece and woolly hat may not make you feel like red carpet material. Who cares though? Not the other people on the holiday. They will probably be wearing ear muffs as well. Prepare for all inevitabilities, with a bottle of sun block in one hand and a ski jacket in the other.
If you are going to be outdoors a lot, particularly in summer, wear long sleeves and light colours. Sun burn isn’t just annoying, it can be really painful. Why risk the enjoyment of your hard earned holiday? Use at least factor 20 and above. The higher the factor number, the longer you can stay in the sun without turning into a human crisp.
4. Leave your valuables back home
Sports holidays can be intensive. Don’t bring your favorite pair of designer jeans onto a horse riding holiday, or your brand new stilettos out to walk in the hills. When I go on adventurous holidays, I bring a disposable camera. You don’t have to worry about losing it or breaking it. You can be spontaneous, jumping in the sea for a swim or asking a passer-by to take a group snap, without worrying about theft or damage
5. Finally: Don’t worry!
I’ve saved the best ‘til last. Enjoy. Achieve. Sports holidays are a fantastic way to stay fit, meet new people and gain a real sense of personal achievement. The things you have to work for are the most rewarding. Surprise yourself; you are more capable than you might believe.
