What You'll Do

After hotel pickup, say goodbye to the coast for the day and you’ll wind your way through the mountains of the Basque Country until you’re met by the sunny hills of La Rioja, carpeted with endless rows of grape vines. You’ll be taken to a very special, four generation, family run Bodega where they’ll show you the whole wine making process. Then hit the relax button, it’s the tasting and tapas session on the patio overlooking the valley. For lunch you’ll feast on a traditional 3 course meal accompanied by the regions finest, with the perfect dream setting right inside the winery. Off down through the vines we’ll stop off at a famed bodega and prepare to be wowed. Next it’s over to the eleventh century town of Laguardia to amble through the sun drenched cobbled streets visiting the hidden cellar caves full to the brim of the regions finest.

We were a group of 8 guys celebrating a friends 40th Birthday and came to San Sebastian for a long weekend. Our guide took us to La Rioja where we spent the whole day, we visited 3 wineries and went to La Guardia (1000 year old town) for lunch. We asked to visit Marques De Riscal and our guide chose the other wineries and the restaurant. Both of his choices were excellent. Our guide was fantastic, friendly, accommodating, knowledgeable, fully bi-lingual and a lovely person. He picked us up and dropped us of from our accommodation.

Our guide not only introduced us to Rioja, but he entertained us with his stories and knowledge of the region. We were picked up at a convenient location, driven a lovely route to the wine region, shown the beautiful Gehry masterpiece that is the Hotel Marqués de Riscal, and treated to a tour and tasting at the Bodegas Luis Canas. For lunch, our guide made us a reservation at the Restaurante Marixa, which had an incredible view of vineyards and a delicious menu. After a tour of the quaint walled town of Laguardia, our guide drove us back to San Sebastian. If we had more time in San Sebastian, we would have looked at another excursion.

Location Information

You’ll be picked up at your hotel in San Sebastian, then driven one and a half hours to the La Rioja region. You’ll be dropped off back at your hotel after your tour. Please let us know your tastes and Penny will arrange the perfect restaurant for you*.

*All groups are different when it comes to food and wine with different tastes and budgets, so Penny prefers to book a restaurant suited to your individual needs rather than including it in the overall price.
