What You'll Do

Dig down to the roots of Madrid, and truly get under the skin of the city on a tour that takes you from the medieval heart of Toledo to authentic estates that represent a step back in time.

The first stop on our guided tour will be the beautiful museum city of Toledo, declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO. One of the oldest cities in Europe, its narrow cobbled streets are bordered with a weave of architectural styles, including Arabic, Gothic, Mudéjar, Renaissance and Baroque.

Toledo is known as the “city of three cultures” and has been heavily influenced by the Christian, Muslim and Jewish cultures that have shaped this unique city.

We will wander through this maze of twisting passageways, past the grand domes of mosques and the dignified old synagogues, until we reach the piercing spires of Catedral de Toledo, a magnificent example of medieval Gothic architecture. We’ll explore the ornate interior and take in some of the masterful works of art by Velázquez, Goya and – of course – El Greco.

We will then stop off at the church of San Tomé, which contains El Greco’s masterpiece, The Burial of the Count of Orgaz.

Then, take in some incredible panoramic views of Toledo, as it cascades from the hillsides down to the Tagus River, from the tower of Los Jeronimos Church.

Entering this church, you’ll discover one of the city of Toledo’s magical hidden gems – a monastery of cloistered nuns, still living out ancient traditions and rituals in the heart of the city.

Try some typical Toledan marzipan, one of the most popular treats in the city, and the nuns will show us the recipe that has been passed down from generation to generation, for centuries.

As we roll into the afternoon, we will head out to the Finca El Castañar farmstead, located in the picturesque Montes de Toledo, just one hour from Madrid. This part of the trip offers a unique experience to escape the city and enjoy the Madrid lifestyle beyond the city limits.

Enjoy a tasting session of authentic Iberian wines, meats, cheeses and breads in a cosy, rustic setting. All the food and wine is produced using traditional methods on the farmstead itself, meaning they are all of exceptional quality and absolutely as fresh as food can get.

Then, accompanied by our professional guide in an open-top 4WD truck we will take a tour of the “Conde de Mayalde”. The tour will feature Iberian pigs, Manchega sheep, as well as the olive groves and the vineyards of the Finca El Castañar farmstead, and an insight into authentic rural life on a beautiful traditional farmstead.

Your guide will take you to see the majestic “Conde de Mayalde”, or the fighting livestock. You’ll learn all about the farmwork that goes into rasing these cows, including the “tienta” of the cows, testing their bravery and nobility, to select suitable cows for reproduction.

At the end of your tour (the experience lasts around 7.5 hours), you will return to the centre of Madrid in a comfortable minibus, where your guide will be able to recommend things to do during the rest of your stay.

PLEASE NOTE THESE ARE PREMIUM SMALL GROUP TOURS. PRIVATE TOURS CAN BE ACCOMMODATED ON REQUEST.

When it comes to travel and favourite places, his philosophy is 'it’s not about the place, it’s about the experience'. Ignasi does have a few favourite places though... one being his hometown of Barcelona. He has fond memories of Barcelona and would encourage anyone who visits to get lost walking in the streets - definitely the best way to discover the city. His other favourite place is Sri Lanka, having visited recently and loving that parts of the island are still virgin to mass tourism. Ignasi and his fabulous team make sure to only offer tours in small groups so that everyone’s experience is more personal. They don’t use umbrellas or microphones but instead make sure that they get to know the guests and show them the way of the local - not just the main tourist attractions. They also strive to do things differently by using more exciting ways to explore like using premium electric bikes or even offering helicopter and hot air balloon rides. The team are experienced local advisors -not large corporate tour operators. They can't wait for you to experience their city with them from a local perspective!

Great tour! Our tour guide, Sara Maria, kept us entertained with fun facts as we toured a beautiful church with great views, walked through the city, saw the famous El Greco painting and tasted mazapan at a pretty convent.. The farm we toured was a new one for the tour company so they didn't have all the details smoothed out, but it was lots of fun. We met the pampered bulls raised for fights and running as well as meat, and the acorn fed pigs. We were then served a wonderful spread of farm-produced ham and beef and cheese and wine.
