Get more in touch with the Azores than ever before, eating local food cooked with steam from the earth, swimming in geothermally heated pools, and drinking in incredible scenery.
A personalised, comfortable and hassle-free tour with a local guide, helping you to understand the stunning scenery, and no rushing from viewpoint to viewpoint, instead savouring the landscape slowly.
You’ll experience the local restaurants and the local cuisine, and interact with the local islanders to get a taste of their culture.
The tour begins at around 9 am from Ponta Delgada, where you will meet your guide and head to Caldeiras da Lagoa Furnas, on a tour that will get you in touch with the volcanic roots of the island through the geothermal activity that is present all over the island.
At Caldeiras da Lagoa das Furnas, you’ll get the chance to try the famous “Cozido”, one of the most iconic dishes from the Azores. A mixture of regional meat and vegetables, it’s cooked solely with the steam that seeps from fissures in the very earth, and is a gastronomic experience not to miss.
Later on, you’ll visit the centenary Terra Nostra botanical garden, to get an all-encompassing experience of the vast variety of plant life that is native to the islands. It is here that you are invited for a dip in the iron-rich, geothermally heated pool that is warmed naturally to 35-40 degrees centigrade.
For lunch, visit a local restaurant where you’ll get a taste for real, authentic Azores cuisine, before dropping in on the town of Furnas, complete with its fumaroles and natural springs, all of which have a unique taste.
On the way back to Ponta Delgada, you will pass by the tea plantation of Gorreana, where you can take a look at the tea factory and enjoy a cup of local tea produced right there on the plantation.
Finally, you’ll be dropped back off in Ponta Delgada to complete the tour.
