Meet Denia and family, our activity holiday hosts in Zakynthos, Greece

“Antonio and Effie could not have been more attentive than they were. I had a fabulous time with them.” Diane – a solo traveller who has recently returned from our cooking and wine holiday in Greece.

Yet another glowing 5 star review for Antonio and Effie’s family who run our activity holidays on the Greek island of Zakynthos, so we thought it would be a good time to catch up with the native islanders that run these increasingly popular cooking, photography and ceramics holidays.

Each of their holidays is unique and whether you join them for photography, cooking or ceramics, in that in addition to amazing tuition, you will be seeing the best of the culture, sites, and geography that the island has to offer.

So as you are being essentially adopted by a family of Greeks for a week, it is best you get to know them…

Meet the family

Antonio is responsible for all transfers, trips out and getting everyone anywhere on the island.

Nothing is too much trouble – from arranging car hire and negotiating the best possible deal for you, to driving you to a supermarket for provisions if you would prefer not to drive, he has got you covered.

When not driving, Antonio can be seen keeping busy with the day to day maintenance of the villas. All of the flower beds you see, along with his grape vines and organic olives, are all labours of love in which Antonio takes great pride and satisfaction. He is sure to offer you a taste of his homemade wine and organic extra virgin olive oil – the olive oil is super delicious but be warned, his home made wine is mighty powerful!

Effie, owner and mother

Effie is responsible for the smooth day to day running of all of domestic needs. She takes a great deal of care to ensure every part of the villas inside and out are kept spotlessly clean and in good order.

With a keen eye for detail, nothing gets overlooked! If you need anything at all to make your stay more comfortable; an extra pillow, the use of an iron and board, even a laundry service, just ask Effie, always keen to ensure guests have a wonderful stay.

She also makes the most wonderful Greek breakfasts and desserts, so come ready to eat. Hospitality and the happiness of her guests is Effie’s greatest pleasure.

Regardless of your budget, once you are in her hands she will do everything in her power to make sure you experience the best of Zakynthos during your stay. Her biggest goal is to quite simply make sure guests want to return for more.

A clever and caring young woman, Denia prides herself on running the family business.

Denia answered some questions for us in regards to how exactly their activity holidays make for the perfect holiday in Greece, whether you are travelling solo or with others.

What makes your place a unique Greek holiday experience?

Because we are a family business and literally are always on hand, we are all involved in the tours and activities with the guests, and can always easily be found if needed. We welcome the guests into a traditional Greek family and show them the best of Zakynthos as if they were our friends. We are very proud of where we’re from and what we have to offer and we want you to love it too! This is a truly authentic experience.

As our villas accommodate up to 30 people, there are always people around and we have accommodation for all types of travellers; solo travellers, families or a few friends looking to get away.

Our activities can have up to 8 people at a time, so there can be a good mix but still small enough to be personal and not crowded. Whatever you’re doing, someone is always around!

The great thing here is that we attract all ages, many solo travellers and people from Europe, the United States and Australia. There has been a rise in solo travellers over the years – people are definitely not afraid to get out there, experience what they want to see and do, and make new friends along the way.

If I travel solo, what opportunities will there be to mingle and meet others?

First of all, if you’re alone on an activity with me, you’re in good company. I know the best places to go, the best sightseeing, places to eat or to grab a drink. Expect to be doing activities with a new friend.

Aside from that, we offer a lot of opportunities to mingle with other people, and this goes for locals as well as tourists, as that’s the best part of travelling! Every week, we plan activities and tours for anyone to jump in on if they would like to see or do something new. With our fully A/C mini van, we go to off the beaten track to stunning locations all over the island. Join us and swim in secret beaches only known to locals, discover mesmerising locations, taste authentic local cuisine and meet locals and tourists from all over the world.

It is wonderful to join in on something unexpected and our activities change depending on what’s going on the week you’re here. The best way to get to know any new place is of course, by befriending a local… and we love it!

What is your favourite thing to introduce your guests to that is unique to your area?

For this I have a few but there is something for everyone.

I am sure you may have heard of the Shipwreck beach and the blue caves, just give it a quick google if you haven’t, but to see and swim there in person is truly extraordinary. The clear blue waters will call out to you, so be sure to pack a swimming costume!

If you’re a lover of amazing cocktails right on the beach, you’ll love Kui bar – I have never met anyone who doesn’t.

I also love the sunset in Kabi, it is just a gem surrounded by clear turquoise waters, mountains and olive groves. You’ll just have to see it for yourselves…
