Summer in the City
An alternative take on escaping ‘summer in the city’ from Not In the Guidebooks.
In the UK the real start of British summer time is signalled each year with Glastonbury Festival, Royal Ascot races and, of course, the first week of Wimbledon. The UK is enjoying a relative heat wave this year. Yes that’s right folks, the temperature is well over 25 degrees and the country is literally melting.
However, we did a quick survey amongst our Not In The Guidebooks partners in Cape Town, Sydney and Galle are we’ve got the impression they are wondering what all the fuss is about. Average summer temperatures in Cape Town are about 23 degrees, in Galle it’s pushing 30 degrees, whilst in Sydney the day time temperature rarely drops below 20 degrees for 9 months of the year. Point taken.
So whilst the UK population busies itself forming a mass exodus and traffic jam to the coast, leaping in to murky ponds on Hampstead Heath and generally consuming their own body weight in ice lollies … we round up the best ways to cool off ‘Not In The Guidebooks’ style.
In Cape Town you could spend a summers evening enjoying a gourmet mussel feast in a secret beach location with spectacular views of Camps Bay and the sunset. If you’re feeling the heat you can cool off with a cold water snorkel or rock jump in to the refreshing ocean.
Our top recommendation to escape the heat of Sydney is to head for Serendipity Canyon in the Blue Mountains. Canyoning is the perfect summer adventure and you’ll enjoy a total of four wet abseils and a thrilling water jump. Guaranteed to increase your heart rate and lower your body temperature!
In a similar vein we operate a full day river rafting in Sri Lanka. You’ll drive inland to explore picturesque rural landscapes as you head towards the mountains and the town of Kitulgula. This is the base for your rafting expedition and the perfect summer cool down.
Of course in Scotland it is a slightly different story. You can make the most of the long summer days and explore the great outdoors on a Munro Adventure. Long may the UK heat wave last!
Cool off. Cool down. Do something different. Enjoy your ‘Summer in the City’ with Not In The Guidebooks.
