What You'll Do

Immerse yourself in the more authentic side of this well known tourist destination, as you visit local Mayan communities and explore the natural wonders of the area.

Get to know this tourist destination from a more authentic, and literally more immersive point of view. This tour includes a good combination of leisure time, visiting local Mayan communities, and activities that are on the more active side.

You will have the opportunity to visit a local Mayan community, which has recently started providing visitors with a glimpse into their daily lives: traditional life, local food, agricultural rituals, and weaving will be shown on these hands on experiences.

The tour also includes a must see: the archaeological site of Tulum, the only Mayan site overlooking the Caribbean sea – we have crowned this experience with a visit to a cenote. As opposed to your typical, open cenote where you bathe and dive, you will explore an underground cavern system and learn more about its secrets and significance to the Maya people.

Finally, topping off the immersive experiences, you will take a boat tour to visit a natural reserve, where you can learn more about the conservation efforts, snorkel in a coral reef and enjoy a delicious lunch of local food.

Your Local Host:

Alex and Team

Alex and his team take you to see the less visited, more authentic side of the country. Even if you’re staying in a big resort area, we have designed our tours to focus on unique experiences.

Wander through cobblestone streets, watch craftspeople in their workshops (or participate in craft making!), taste the food, and learn how to make it. Visit the natural wonders of Mexico, and marvel with our rich culture.

Having worked in tourism in Mexico for 50+ years, we have curated our experiences to show you only what we love the most.

The rest of the day is at your leisure.

Explore Playa del Carmen

Your first day in HM Playa del Carmen is yours to do as you please, and get some rest from the flight the day before. We recommend taking a walk around 5th Av, and getting to know the local cuisine in one of the many nearby restaurants.

Contoy Island Tour

Rise early and get a good breakfast, as today we head north on a boat tour that will take us to the gorgeous Contoy Island – an often forgotten Caribbean paradise, it does not attract the same crowds as Isla Mujeres or Cozumel, but it is just as beautiful, perhaps even more. This secluded island receives a limited amount of visitors per day, as it is a natural reserve – few places in the area are as strict in terms of the impact made by visitors, but you will be able to enjoy the white sandy beaches, snorkel on the way to the island, and have a delicious lunch of local food.

Mayan Community Visit and Muyil Archaeological Site

This morning, make sure to pack all your belongings as you will check out of the hotel after breakfast. The journey today takes you to see a more authentic, less visited side of life among the Mayan people of the region. We will journey south to a small village, where the local people have coordinated with one another to show visitors a glimpse into their lives. The experience will include a ritual agricultural ceremony, and introduce you to some of the fruits and seeds they grow in their fields. The experience continues as one of the elders teaches you the technique for weaving “henequen”, a plant that grows in the region and that was once so valuable, it was known as “green gold”. To top the experience off, you will learn more about the “meliponas”, a variety of stingless honey bee. Learn from the local people about its relevance for the Mayas, and its importance even today as a key player in medicine, rituals, and gastronomy.

After a tasty lunch in the community, we will head back north to the glamping site where you will sleep tonight. On the way there, we will visit the archaeological site of Muyil, a smaller yet very impressive and often overlooked Mayan site, steeped in the lush jungle of the area.

Meals included: Breakfast & Lunch

Tulum and Cenote Exploration

After breakfast, you will start your journey by driving south to the walled city of Tulum, showing you perhaps the most stunning views in any Mayan site, as the main temple sits on a cliff overlooking the Mexican Caribbean waters. Among stone walls and turquoise blues, we will visit the site guided by our host, and get a few minutes to enjoy at leisure.

You will then head to visit a cenote – cenotes were considered sacred by the Mayan people, and held a very special place in their beliefs. Today you will have a guided tour of an underground cave system and learn more about cenote formation and their importance to the Mayan people.
