Craftspeople of Oaxaca

What You'll Do

Get close and intimate with Oaxaca’s craftspeople as we visit the experts in their own shops, in their own towns. You will also have the chance to visit some of Mexico's natural wonders as well as a mezcal distillery and try some of the finest Mexican cuisine.

Oaxaca is arguably the cultural and gastronomical capital of Mexico. Its markets host some of the best and most imaginative crafts you will see in Mexico, and arguably the best Mexican food.

The tour allows you to set up camp in downtown Oaxaca city, from where you will take day tours to the nearby towns. Besides visiting the crafts masters, you will visit two archaeological sites, as well as two of Mexico’s natural wonders; the widest tree in the world, and the petrified waterfalls. And of course, you can’t miss a visit to a mezcal distillery (mezcal is tequila’s naughty cousin).

As we make our way through the different towns, you will be able to learn more about the specific craft that is mastered in each of them, as well as visit the craft masters in their workshops.

When it’s time to visit the mezcal distillery, you will arrive at one of the lesser known mezcal distilleries, allowing for a unique, more authentic experience.

And of course, throughout the tour, you will have several opportunities to taste the delicious cuisine that makes Oaxaca one of the best places to eat in Mexico.

Nature, archaeology, and woven wool

Today offers a good glimpse into the richness of the state of Oaxaca, as in a single day you will experience archaeology, craft making and natural wonders. First you will visit the archaeological site of Mitla (literally translated as “place of the dead”, or “underworld”), famous for its elaborate and intricate geometric carving designs that can be found around the site. After a visit to the site, you will head to the small town of Teotitlan del Valle, famous for its craftspeople, who have mastered the art of wood weaving, creating colourful, ornate rugs, created on hand operated looms. Finally, before going back to Oaxaca City, you will visit the stunning Tule tree, the widest tree in the world, and among the oldest in Mexico.

Crafts and archaeology

Day four of the tour leans a bit more on the craft-making side. The tour today starts with a visit to Monte Alban, the most important archaeological site in Oaxaca, and notable for its hand carved stones depicting dancing people. Now, get ready for some workshop visits. First, the little town of Santo Tomas Jalieza, where the local craft masters have specialised in embroidering textiles, initially creating mostly belts and giving their hometown the nick name of “city of belts”. Their delicate work can now be found also in rugs, purses, and others. The next town we will visit is San Martin Tilcajete, where the local craftspeople master the unique art of making “alebrijes” which are brightly coloured, wood carved or cardboard-made mythical creatures that are very popular in Mexican folk art. Finally, you will visit the town of San Bartolo Coyotepec, home to black clay pottery, which produces beautiful pieces in a shiny black finish without the need for painting.

The last day of touring will take you to witness and learn more about one of the most famous of all the natural wonders of Mexico: the petrified waterfalls. A highly unique and stunning view, the waterfalls provide also an opportunity to bathe in a natural pool formed by a fresh water spring in the mountain. On the way back to Oaxaca City, you will visit a mezcal distillery, where you can learn more about the varieties of mezcal, its difference with tequila, and participate in mezcal tasting.
