A little sapphire gem in the Indian Ocean, Mauritius is known for its pure white-sand beaches, ludicrously warm seas and as a playground for those who enjoy things on the slightly more luxurious side of life.
Away from the mega-resorts however, there’s a wonderful world of African and Indian inspired cuisine drifting from little shacks that make sup sleepy fishing villages, excellent hiking in the forests and mountains of the interior, and world-class snorkelling and diving around the islets and reefs.
There’s also the charming little colonial touches, botanical gardens and plantation houses that tell of a fascinating, if a little dark, history on the island. Today though, it’s a place to relax, unwind, and reward yourself by just getting a bit off the beaten track to soak up the best of the contemporary culture and cuisine.
