The food fight of your life…

On the last Wednesday of August, at the peak of tomato season, up to 40,000 people will make their way to Buñol, a small town 25 km west of Valencia for the biggest food fight of their life.

Things start Spanish style with a ham on top of a greasy pole and once that’s captured, the trucks roll in, water cannons are fired and a tomato war is declared.

There are no rules and no winners just pure food fight heaven as both sides hammer each other with over ripe tomatoes until the streets run with a river of tomato juice.

Water cannons also signal the end of the fight and the annual clean up begins hosing down the streets and if they are lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time, also the people.

Don’t wear white, wear goggles and enjoy the finest food fight of your life.

You could just go to Valencia for La Tomatina but why rush away? Valencia is Spain’s third-largest city comes as a pleasant surprise to many.

Home to paella, orange trees, great art museums and the Holy Grail, Valencia is also blessed with great weather and festivals aplenty, not just La Tomatina.
