Valley of Thor Trail Running Retreat

What You'll Do

Iceland – the land of fire and ice is one of Mother Nature’s real treasures. Colours are electric, views magnificent and there are waterfalls almost everywhere you look. So, for all you lovers of travel and keeping fit, why not combine them both and explore Iceland on two feet, and at your own pace.

This trip runs 14th-17th July 2021

Nestled in the heart of the nature reserve and between two magical glaciers you’ll find Þórsmörk (Thórsmörk) or Valley of Thor. The mountain and valley to which this area is named provide popular hiking routes including the Laugavegur trail.

We follow this route for only a few kilometres before deviating and making our own tracks on the less trodden trails, but equally as jaw-dropping. With so much to see in Iceland, we recommend you give yourself a few more days one side of the retreat to perhaps explore the Golden Circle or Reykjavik. Close by to the trail you will find many of Iceland’s famous attractions including Skógafoss waterfall, Golden Circle and Thingvellir National Park.

Join us on this Icelandic running adventure as we run 45 kilometres over 2 days, with a total ascent of 2000 metres.

Experience Itinerary

Arrival day into Reykjavik

Today is an arrivals day and you are free to make your way to the hotel at any time. After settling into your accommodation, you will meet the team and fellow runners over an evening meal.

Running day in Iceland

We enjoy an early breakfast today to let the food settle before heading out on the trails. First, we catch a 4×4 bus to Thórsmörk, a remote and wild valley. We drop our luggage to the new hotel and take stock of the kit required, stretch, and head out for our first run along the valley and gently climb to one of the highest peaks in the area, Rjúpnafell.

From here we enjoy magnificent views in all directions, the perfect place to catch our breath and admire panoramic views. After this, we descend to run beneath Tindfjoll for a view of the river Krossa before heading back to our accommodation through lush green vegetation. The trails in this area can be technical underfoot with volcanic rock, we take our time and enjoy the views. The afternoon is at your own leisure, relaxing back at base, or using the sauna and naturally heated pool facilities that are located nearby.

Running day in Iceland

After a hearty breakfast and a warm-up, we head out on a marginally shorter but no less spectacular run. This sees us join the fimmvörðuháls hike for a few km, before following the valley floor and river Hvanna. Two further small summits up Vestrihattur and Valahnukur form the final part of the days trail running.

Back to the hotel for lunch, we rest and unwind for the remainder of the day. Weather permitting there will be an optional outdoor strength and stretch class for those wishing to loosen the legs after two days of running (approx.. 30-45 mins) or just unwind ahead of the evening meal.

Final day

We enjoy one final breakfast and wave goodbye to Thórsmörk, as we make our way back to Hvolsvöllur by 4×4 bus.

If you plan to fly home immediately please make sure that you book an evening to allow for travel on this day. However, with so much to see in Iceland, it is well worth adding on a few days to explore if you can afford the time.
