Our food, wine, and cultural walking and tasting tour begins at The Central Market Hall, Budapest’s cathedral of food and one of Europe’s largest and most spectacular indoor markets.
At the market we’ll introduce you to Hungarian cuisine through the great variety and abundance of ingredients on display. We will discuss the spectacular building, the culture of eating and drinking in Hungary, the ingredients, the dishes commonly made from them. As we walk the market aisles we’ll taste a selection of foods which will leave you wanting more.
From there, we’ll start our exploration of the surrounding neighbourhood. After a lunch feast at a traditional butcher, we will head to a classic coffeehouse to sample some of the elegant cakes for which Hungarian bakers are known. After a quick stop at an award-winning chocolatier, we’ll be ready to relax over three glasses of quintessential wine accompanied by some artisanal cheese.
Then, a sommelier will introduce us to the Hungarian wine regions, varietals, and styles, helping you put the Hungarian wine scene in context. We’ll end with a taste of the spectacular golden-tinted Tokaji aszú wine.
This tour will give you a taste of the traditional side of Hungarian cuisine, and the modern artisan producers and specialty shops spicing up Budapest’s food scene.

We founded Taste Hungary—our Budapest-based food and wine tour company—in 2008, and ever since have loved doing this deep dive into the foodways and wine culture of Hungary. After spending years researching and writing Carolyn’s culinary guidebook to Hungary—Food, Wine, Budapest (Little Bookroom, 2008)—we started Taste Hungary with the intention of sharing their passion for Hungarian food and wine with like-minded travellers who want to experience the region’s authentic flavours and experiences.
At our independent wine shop and tasting cellar in Budapest’s Palace District, The Tasting Table Budapest, our team of sommeliers leads daily wine tastings, introducing wine lovers to the (often unknown) treasures of Hungary.
Budapest is Hungary’s vibrant bustling capital. The city is bisected by the river Danube and there is a chain link bridge connecting the hilly ‘Buda’ area with the flat lands of ‘Pest’. It is a colourful city with arts, history, thermal pools and incredible markets, along with some of the best bars in the world! Over recent years Budapest has evolved into a wine and foodie capital where traditional and modern methods fuse in dramatic style.
