What You'll Do

Join this active trail running tour in Olympus National Park in Greece – designed by runners and for runners. You will run for approximately 4-6 hours per day depending on your speed, reaching a total of 3250 metres for panoramic views. What a perfect way to mix running for pleasure and leisure!

Many have visited the stunning beaches and explored the country’s Mediterranean coastline before, but they won’t know a Greece like this. Its sandy shoreline only illustrates one aspect of this country; we aim to show you the other sides on foot which should not be overlooked.

Set off into the biosphere location of Olympus National Park, with its mythological connections, raw beauty, and rare flora and fauna. Many think of Greece as being a hot and dry country however, the scenery is as diverse as the trails which cross along its landscape. From sky-reaching high peaks to lush pine forest, we traverse through this beautiful paradise at a runner’s pace, enjoying the views (and each step) as we go.

The town of Litochoro sits at the foothills and provides a cultural pit-stop and base for this trail running retreat.

Experience Itinerary

Arrival day

After arriving to the guesthouse, you’ll meet the team and the other intrepid runners over an evening meal in a local restaurant. After sampling the best of Greece and perhaps a drink to wash it down with, we return to the guesthouse and pack for the following days adventure.

Greek running trails

After waking early for breakfast, we work through a final kit check, warm up and stretch, then we’re off. We take a short 10-minute transfer to the start of the trailhead where we tackle the majority of the day’s ascent in one go. This is unrelenting but has beautiful woodland tracks to enjoy along the way with vista back out and down the valley. We run/hike today, but the reward is high with us gaining in elevation and amazing panoramic views that come with it, all in preparation for what lies ahead tomorrow.

We spend the night at a typical mountain refuge, which provides comfortable but basic accommodation. Here we can enjoy life’s simple pleasures as we sit back and enjoy the towering peaks of the Olympus National Park. The onsite restaurant provides local food for refreshment and refuelling at dinner.

 

Greek running trails

After breakfast and a warmup, we head out for the day that is through picturesque woodlands before reaching the valley and leading us back to Litochoro. We are less exposed on the ridgelines today and generally heading in a downward trajectory. We return to our guesthouse for a well-earned shower and beer. We have the afternoon to relax and unwind around the old town. With the beach only 6km away this is also an option or just rest up ahead of the evening meal together at another local restaurant.

Final day

As this is the final day you have two options. You can join the group for a quick stretch and an easy morning run (45min) or treat yourself to a well-earned extra hour or two in bed. After breakfast, the tour unfortunately comes to an end.

Location Information

This holiday does not include flights so you need to make your own way to Greece. You can fly directly to Thessaloniki airport which is served by a selection of international and budget airlines including Ryanair and easyJet. A host of car rental companies are available at good value prices and the drive to the Litochoro hotel will take 1.5 hours.

We recommend car sharing where possible and can put you in touch with fellow runners should you be on the same or similar flights.

  • 2 nights’ accommodation at a local guesthouse on a twin shared basis. 1-night stay in a mountain refuge on a bunk beds style basis
  • Breakfast will be served by accommodation hosts (Sat-Mon). Evening meals are enjoyed at local restaurants (Fri & Sun pm).
  • 3 carefully curated guided trail runs. Designed by runners for runners.
  • Expert running guides throughout. Qualified leader, outdoor first-aider and experienced ultra-marathon runner
  • Training plan prior to departure

FAQs

You will stay in guesthouse accommodation for both your first and final nights. The guesthouse is centrally located with easy access to all the amenities.

Twin rooms are booked based on two sharing. Single person supplement can usually be arranged. Get in touch to find out more about this.

In order to make the most of the national park we opt to stay in a mountain refuge for the second night. This not only gives us amazing views and a great place to base ourselves for the following day but offers a wonderful and remote experience. They are basic but comfortable and enables us to stay in an amazing location with spectacular views to wake up to.

Single supplements are available on an enquiry basis. This is only available on the 1st & 3rd night since the second night is spent in a refuge. The cost of a single supplement is £115 per person.

The trail runs are expertly guided throughout. Rest assured, your guide is an experienced ultra-marathon runner and Qualified Leader & Outdoor First Aider.

This is a small group with a maximum of 8 people. It runs with a minimum of 4 people.
