Summary

2 Nights 3 days Kayaking, Rafting Camping experience in Mahaweli river adjacent to the Wasgamuwa National park.

If there’s one natural resource that is inextricably intertwined with the very fabric of life in the rural areas of Sri Lanka it is the river Mahaweli. Starting from the mystique hills in the central highlands the Mahaweli River flows 335 kilometres through much of the Central, and North Central provinces before finally meeting the ocean in Trincomalee in the Eastern Province. The Mahaweli reservoirs serve as the economical and agricultural hubs of the region around which human habitations are dispersed. The Mahaweli River also flows through the Wasgamuwa National Park. Known for its abundant elephant populations, its scenic setting bordering the central highlands and the dry zones of Sri Lanka, the Wasgamuwa National Park is also unique in that it has its full complement of predators of which bears are noteworthy.
Therefore, it is worth noting that Mahaweli River not only serves as a cornerstone of the political, economic and social landscapes of the country but it also embodies the sheer diversity of flora and fauna that Sri Lanka has to offer. Thus, in many ways, a journey through the River Mahaweli is journey through Sri Lanka itself and can be an enriching experience to any nature loving travel enthusiast.
A multi-day rafting expedition through the river offers the most intimate interaction with everything that Mahaweli has to offer and the traveller can learn about, appreciate and bask in the splendour of the river Mahaweli.
