Your Local Host:
After serving in the Royal Marine Commando's for 5 years and working as a professional sailing & outdoor instructor, I was looking for a place to fulfill my vision and dreams. I found it here in the Finnish Lapland, where I can share the natural phenomena, opportunities, and beauty this amazing place has to offer. Lapland is also a great place for me to raise my family. Local nature connects people as you can share beautiful moments with strangers in very peaceful environments. Winters here are long, and without doubt this is the hardest job I have ever done. But I love it and I can promise the warmest of welcomes and an amazing time!
You will be transferred from Rovaniemi airport to your yurt, with a stop in Rovaniemi to pick up supplies for dinner. There you have free time to go and explore your surroundings and get your bearings. The yurt is in the countryside and is a true nature retreat in the snow coated wilderness of Lapland, by a lake. There are several Yurts together and a shared kitchen block and bathroom block close by.
The yurts are fully furnished with big wooden beds, drawers and comfortable chairs, carpets and rugs on the floor.
Location: The cozy and warm Yurt is located 25km (About 20 mins drive) from Rovaniemi centre, and is right next to a river.
Yurt size; 28 m2 with a glass roof
Breakfast: served from the yurt ́s refrigerator (yogurt, muesli, bread, cheese, ham, cookies, juice and tea)
An open fire grill where you can grill your own food for dinner
Reception open 24/7
Shared toilets and showers (next to the yurts)
Ice fishing, Santa's Village and Northern Lights
Your day will start with breakfast at the accommodation after which, you will head out with your guide to learn how to fish through holes in the ice and hopefully catch something! This once in a lifetime trip will last around 3 hours and will take you to a frozen lake around 20 kilometres north of Rovaniemi, over the Arctic Circle. Immerse yourself in the pure raw arctic beauty and in the total silence. All the places that we choose for ice-fishing have a good chance to catch something so your efforts should be rewarded! Ice fishing is also a form of meditation – great for mental wellbeing. Many locals still practice this activity during the winter to catch food for themselves or for their dogs, and to enjoy the relaxing serenity of Lapland nature.
After being picked up and given proper winter clothing/boots (it can be very cold on the lake!), your guide will drive you towards the perfect peaceful place. You may have a short 5-10 minute walk through the old arctic forests before you finally reach a promising spot, your guide will show you how to drill your own hole in the ice, and will teach you the basic techniques how to ice-fish. Then, it is just a matter of time and patience before you can feel the first bites !
Your guide will always be there to assist you, in case you need help or feel cold. While you are fishing, they will chop wood and make a fire on the shore for you. Some local Finnish snacks and hot drinks will be served around the fire and will offer a relaxed opportunity to your guide to answer all your questions about life in the Arctic and Lapland in general. If you manage to catch a fish (of a decent size), your guide will happily prepare it,and cook it on the fire for you! If the fish are undersized, we will quickly return them to the ice without unnecessarily harming them.
Today you also will get time to visit Santa’s village and enjoy a vibrant Christmas atmosphere with lots of free time to walk around and enjoy all that his village has to offer. With Christmas drinks and local foods, you will get the chance to learn about Lappish Christmas traditions on your visit to the village, for around 3 hours.
Here you can also visit local shops and pick up some supplies for tonight’s dinner.
In the evening you will join a small group to set off on your northern lights adventure hunting for the Aurora Borealis as you drive through the Lapland wilderness and explore arctic nature and fantastic scenery. On the different stops, you may be walking through old, snowy white forests or to the top of fells, across wooden bridges over powerful rapids, or enjoying the absolute silence on a lake beach … Hopefully with Auroras dancing over your head!
This trip is in almost complete darkness, and you see the scenery in a completely new and beautiful way.
On the way, your guide will light a camp fire in the traditional way, using only silver birch bark and flint. Once the fire is lit and the kettle is boiling, your guide will keep an eye on the moving sky. Whilst waiting for the first greenish arches to appear above your head, they will share with you their knowledge and passion about the forest, the nature of Lapland and its wildlife, and naturally the northern lights as you have a hot drink to warm you up, and grill your own sausages over the open fire to enjoy with famous Finnish mustard.
We can’t always guarantee that you will see the lights due to weather conditions but your expert guide will try their hardest to find them, if not you can always try again the next night!
Snowshoeing and Reindeer Farm
Today you will enjoy an exciting snowshoe hike through the beautiful Lappish wilderness. Throughout the 3 hour trip you will be able to see some stunning views of the rolling hills covered in a blanket of perfect snow as well as some extraordinary wildlife. You will definitely want to bring a camera for this one!
Put on your snowshoes and get ready for a relaxing walk in the wilderness! Your guide will lead you deep into the Arctic nature and discover a bit more of the secrets of Lapland. You will snowshoe through old forests, beside frozen rivers or lakes looking for wildlife and prints left in the snow. You may have the chance to see tracks made by arctic hare, weasels, reindeer, wolverines, lynx or wolves!
The tour will be tailored to the ability of the group so that it is suitable for everyone, from beginners to experienced snowshoers. As you explore the white scenery, you will feel the peaceful harmony of Lapland. Your guide will always keep an eye on wildlife and flora, and will teach you more about nature and your surroundings.
Refreshments and a local Finnish BBQ snack will be provided halfway, and your guide will light a fire to keep you warm. This is a great opportunity for you to try out the skills you learned on your Northern Lights trek last night and see if you can make the fire yourself! This break around the open fire will be also the perfect convivial moment for your guide to answer questions about Lapland and life in the Arctic.
Following this, around 2pm you will get the chance to visit the most famous Lappish animal during the reindeer farm visit. You will have chance to interact with the reindeer and explore the Taiga forest as you swish through the snow on a sleigh during the Reindeer Safari. Your visit will take place at one of the most traditional reindeer farms in Lapland. The family herders are based just outside of Rovaniemi on the lovely shores of a peaceful lake. When you arrive with your guide to the farm, you will be invited to take a seat in a sleigh pulled by reindeer, and travelling through the snowy forest and white scenery, you might spot some other arctic animals.
When you come back from the safari, a warm cup of coffee or tea and traditional snacks will wait for you on the farm. The herder will explain about their lifestyle and reindeer husbandry; this is the best time to ask questions and feed your curiosity! There is no rush to return you can spend as much time as you like with the reindeer, before leaving and heading back to your cosy yurt. ( The experience usually lasts around 3 hours)
Then its back to your cozy yurt where you can prepare your dinner on the open fire grill.
