The North Coast 500 is a circular road trip in the north of Scotland that takes in some of the very best and most remote landscapes Scotland has to offer. For both driving and cycling (even walking if you have the time – we are always keen) this route many times we have discovered many hidden local gems, from food pubs and small restaurants where you experience excellent service and stunning fresh food, to great walks into the wilderness, stunning views of ancient landscapes, and much more to discover for yourself – including the odd Whisky Distillery.

This adventure is best enjoyed with a relaxed approach, by cycling or by self-drive (Bike, Car, Camper) over a few days.

The North Coast 500 is a 516-mile (830 km) scenic route around the north coast of Scotland, starting and ending at Inverness Castle. The North Coast 500 (Also known as NC500) was created by the North Highland Initiative and was designed to bring together the best of the north Highlands of Scotland in one iconic touring route.

Location Information

The route runs through the traditional counties of Inverness-shire, Ross and Cromarty, Sutherland and Caithness.

Working clockwise, the route starts at Inverness and runs via Muir of Ord, Applecross, Gairloch, Ullapool, Durness, Thurso, John o’Groats, Wick, Dunrobin Castle, Dingwall then back to Muir of Ord and Inverness. The route of the North Coast 500 takes in many areas of the North Highland Way, a walking route along Scotland’s North Coast.
