Guest review: why Peter can’t get enough of this photography holiday in Greece
Peter is a bit of a celebrity in the NotInTheGuideBooksoffice. A keen photographer, we’ve now lost count of how many times he has done a photography holiday with us. This could be his 6th. Or maybe 7th.
This time around, Peter chose to return to the stunning Greek island of Zakynthos. Less than a year after his first visit.
So what brought him back? And exactly makes it stand out from other photography holidays?
We caught up with him on his return to find out more.
So we believe this is your second photography holiday in Greece…
Yes! After another holiday in Spain didn’t work out, I decided to return for another week’s photography holiday with Denia and her family.
On my arrival at the airport, I was met by Antonio whom I met last year on my previous visit. He drove me to the accommodation where Effie (his wife) and Denia (his daughter) were waiting. They both gave me the same warm welcome Antonio had given me at the airport. My week had started.
Did you enjoy your time with your holiday hosts?
The family are all very friendly and knowledgeable about the island. Nothing is too much trouble for them and they really care about their visitors and their enjoyment of their holiday.
Dimitri, the photographer, is in the same mould!
Tell us more about your experience photographing the island.
The photography days were spent with Dimitri – a professional photographer. He knows the island like the back of his hand and drove us to some very interesting places to take pictures.
As well as his photography, Dimitri is very good at explaining sometimes complex technical concepts in his excellent English. I came back with many memorable shots!
He also did a couple of additional sessions critiquing our pictures which were extremely useful because they focused on composition rather than technical use of the camera.
What was the highlight of your trip?
On one of the free days, we went on a boat trip to see the sea turtles which live offshore from Laganas. It was a three-hour trip which included some deep-sea swimming and an hour on a beach on one of the islands in the bay.
It was an unforgettable experience. Plus, Effie gave us a free pass for the trip, which was an added bonus.
What did you think of the food?
Breakfast there is an absolute joy! Effie cooks whatever you want but also gave us a delicious fig marmalade on bread. I then opted for cereal, orange juice and coffee.
We also had three meals out with members of the family in local tavernas and restaurants. All were excellent! A great way to spend your evenings.
Would you recommend this photography holiday to other keen photographers like yourself?
I recommend unreservedly a photography holiday here. It is worth bearing in mind though that it does get very hot in summer. It was in the 30s when I was there in June!
No doubt, I will be going back again in the future.
